I took out $200,000 in loans for law school but never passed the bar. Now I'm stuck with all of the debt and none of the prestige

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Rafael Regales, a 47-year-old paralegal.
quote:
When I started law school, I was 32 years old. I was married and had two children, and I knew it was going to be difficult. But I was working in politics at the time, and a lot of the people who held the jobs I wanted were lawyers.
It felt like the way to do important legislative work one day was to become a lawyer. So I started going to law school at night in hopes of earning my law degree and getting the job I wanted.
Law school is expensive — the average law student takes out $160,000 in loans. To cover my tuition and help offset living costs, I took out a loan of $200,000. I was daunted by the number, but I was excited by the prospect of furthering my education and getting a higher-paying job. It felt like an important investment in my and my family's future.
quote:
In the 10 years since I graduated from law school, I've failed the bar twice because of mental-health issues. My debt has ballooned to more than $332,000, including interest.
If I tried to take the bar again, the cost for a class and the test itself could be up to $3,000, which I just can't afford — so I'm stuck with the debt of law school without the prestige of bar membership.

I didn't know being a dumbass was a mental health issue.
But seriously, if you're too mentally ill to pass a test, aren't you too mentally ill to be a lawyer?

So take the bar again? Seems like a simple solution.

I'm not making light of people who actually have problems but it seems like 75% of the population has "mental health issues" these days

Maybe he should sue the law school

Even if this schmuck passes…then what? Like the ambulance chasing sector isn’t already replete with warm bodies.

It's okay. The last thing that this country needs is another attorney...especially another one that struggles to even pass the bar exam. Stay in your lane next time.

Yeah, they've expanded that definition to mean anything and everything. They've also used it as a reason to excuse any behavior.

So tired of this excuse for people's failures. Everyone has issues and pressures they're dealing with. Grow the frick up. You failed the bar because you sat around feeling sorry for yourself instead of channeling your problems towards dedication and studying for the bar.
Pussy.
