Went out last night & knocked what I could off from the ground with a broom
Hit the ice in the eave with broom handle & as it broke water poured out
Fixing to go get the ladder & get to work

Would vented soffits help?

Would make it a bit worse.

Warm air losses from the home heats the roof sheathing/roof and melts snow. The melted snow runs down roof until it hits the eves where the roof is still below freezing because its not getting the rising heat from the home. Now you have saturated snow on the eve that turns into ice forming a dam. If roof continues to be warm and melting snow, water will stack up at the dam and go sideways under shingles.

Removing just the snow around the eves and a bit beyond would help but not guarantee you won't have problems elsewhere. All its takes is 1degree to go from water to ice. Different rooms getting heated slightly different with different amounts of insulation on the ceiling and different roof pitches with valleys/ridges could be the difference of 1 degree and start causing problems.

Just went around with a ladder and plastic tent stake mallet and broke up the ice dam on the edge. I’ll be monitoring it as the day goes on.

Mine didn’t look that bad, but was coming here to post similar. Went around and took about 4’ down all around. North & West side had a thin layer and the gutters were iced up; but South & East had thin layers of ice already building up at the bottom of the snow pile. Gutters were full (leaf guards so can’t get my hands in them) of ice. Hopefully this area will melt real soon and not continue to build ice

Time to take a breather then back to snowball fights, building snowmen, snow angels, and whatever other crazy ideas the kids come up with

Is this sufficient? There was one ice dam

Looks good to me

The parts of my roof that are getting sun are melting and the water is coming down the paths I made in any dams

I left my ladder out so I can check on it as the day goes on and clear any ice that might build back up

That’s my thought. Wouldn’t ice dams just start where I stopped sweeping based on my picture?

It can happen but it is less likely. Those spots should get heat from the attic

I went and raked a good bit off over my eaves. We haven't had any real thawing and it is still all powder up there

I appreciate this thread. Last night i used a push broom to pull off as much snow off the roof as i could from the ground. This morning i got on ladder to pull off some more and clear the gutters as best i could. Had a couple of ice dams, but they seem to be melting now that the sun is hitting them. I feel ok about it and seem to be good so far. Lots of people not doing this at all so surely im better off than them.

It's one of those things that could end up not causing damage to anyone, but it is also a better safe than sorry situation. It's worth the time to clear out your eaves to be sure versus risking it.

Yes, thank you stout. Many of us have never dealt with this type of weather

Despite raking all my eaves and valleys last night, I had some serious ice dams along about 1/2 of my roof line and ice about 4-5" thick in the valleys. Again thanks to this thread, knowing what to look for, I possible saved myself thousands in repair costs.

Just felt like a champion. I just knocked off so many ice dams off my roof. Probably wasn't going to cause any damage, but, I feel alive!!!! Still got one stubborn spot, that I will check back in about an hour. Live men, live!

After discovering that my gutters weren't packed solid with snow, I let them be. I didn't want to pull the snow pack over them, filling them, then they freeze solid.

I feel a lot better now that it's 30 degrees and the sun is melting everything off the roof.

Good luck yall

I just used a long paint handle extended out to about 12' feet I had to knock at least the edges down to help it melt faster and not cause a dam. If you can, I would suggest doing the same.

I didn’t really know why I did this yesterday, mostly thinking I didn’t want the weight on the eaves… now I’m really glad I did that if it avoided water damage.
