That’s where this country went wrong. We told our children that they had to go to college in order to be considered a success in life instead of preaching about developing skills to make them successful in whatever they choose to do

I had a teacher in college that didn’t grade turned in work. She graded on two things - class attendance/participation and the final exam. I actually did learn a lot in that class. Pretty sure everyone made an A.

class attendance

Is a horseshite thing to base any significant part of a grade on. If you can do the work and pass the exams without attending a single class, you shouldn't be penalized for it.

It certainly is, to look down on people who are electricians, plumbers, mechanics, etc because they didn't have a "degree"

I wish schools did more to promote that shite to kids, I mean they start tracking students in K, by the time they've reached 10th grade they have a great idea of which will do well in college and which should be headed to a technical field.

They should be teaching these skills in high school so that instead of graduating with a high school diploma they graduate with certification in their field and they can find a great job making good money at 18 years old.

Would be awesome to go through life with no expectations. That ain't how it works though. 1st time their boss pushes something back they did wrong will be a traumatic experience instead of another day at the office. Welcome to never never land.

They do this, it just isn't promoted as it should be. Rather, it went quite a while being ignored or looked down upon, but some states have started investing in the Career Tech programs again.

I've made it a point to research candidates who are doing this and I vote accordingly. It was a damn shame we nearly let Career Tech die out.

Exactly.

There's nothing wrong w/learning a trade and going to a trade school.

Not everyone is cut out for college.

That’s crazy. I had that exact same experience. It was the give me gpa booster “intro to lsu” 3 hr credit bullshite class that was filled 75% with football players.

It was a joke of a class just like OPs example

They do it but not to the level of other countries. They need to be teaching and pushing these kids towards a field instead of worrying about graduation numbers. Have them learn about different trades their 10th grade year and teach them financial literacy. Their 11th grade year teach them the basics of their chosen field along with financial literacy such as savings, stocks, crypto. Their 12th grade year allow them to intern and learn on the job and instead of graduating with a meaningless high school diploma they graduate with a certification in their chosen field of work.

Current students are in for a rude awakening in the real world. You don’t get graded in life. You get hired, reprimanded, fired, or a raise or salary cut, or you get a lifetime of government checks, free healthcare, and a cold forty on the corner..

It’s starting to change. I know my kids high school offers kids the opportunity to get certified in HVAC, electrical, IT, etc instead of a college bound classes after 10th grade

They are referring to it as “gradism” and say that it is really hard on struggling student’s self esteem.

Coming soon, doctors not diagnosing cancer. Because if you never diagnose it, they don't have cancer!

If only it was changing out this way, instead every student is still required to take their ACT and finish high school

College is pointless for 80% of students, they should be focused on technical skills that will help them more than a worthless degree

Then employers need to stop requiring them to do work a monkey could do.

Nothing I learned in school for my stupid expensive marketing degree, helps with my current job at all. But I have a stable career that I like and make pretty decent money. I wouldn't have been hired if I didn't check the box as having a college degree.

I'm a big advocate for just doing what you need to pursue the career you want. Whether that's college, trade school, etc.

To answer the OP. Not grading is just dumb. It just teaches kids to not care and that they don't have to do the work to get by. I hate that mentality. The teacher is passing on her laziness of not wanting to grade to her students. I'd be upset if a teacher did that to my child. Although, we would never allow that our house. We'd still make my son study and learn.

Most of the college classes I took didn't really pertain for the real world. They were for the perfect world of how everything "should" be. Which as we know never really happens.

She probably also hates getting up early, having to bathe and put on makeup, driving to school, etc.
Maybe she should simply quit teaching.

I don’t understand your point. Don’t “look down” on the trade. Then you say it’s apparent who will do well in college by the 10th grade, and we should funnel everyone else into a trade…. Doesn’t that indicate people choose a trade because they lack intelligence?
