Broke City in a broke state grasping at straws to make its citizenry pay.

Had something similar 2 years ago. Usual bill about $150 or so, then got a bill for $900. Checked the meter when no water was being used, and the triangle was not turning. Called S&WB. Told her the numbers on the meter, vs. the numbers on the last bill, and that I do not have a leak. Was told my previous 4 bills were estimates, and this bill was a reading, so the bill was correct. Went back 2 years( I keep the bills because of home office expense), and showed her average usage of about $150. Got nowhere with her. Upped game to supervisor. Explained situation. Got nowhere. By now, next bill has come, and guess what, $150 or so. Had to get my city council rep involved to get this resolved. Good Luck.

If you had a leak I think you'd know. $3000 is crazy. You might want to call and have them come out ASAP.

I can save you $2 right now. Have them remove that and tell them you’ll wing it.

I had an $800 bill from the City of Lewisville (TX) once.
They asked if I had a leak. I told them for that much they would have a southern version of Lake Lewisville.
They came out to read the meter again and fixed the reading on the next month's bill.

Not going to sweat a $1 a month and take the risk of pissing off those people.
Don’t drink tap water either.

likely just misread your meter or screwed something up in the billing process. just call them and have them investigate.
meantime, turn everything off in the house and go out to see if the meter is still spinning....if so, you have a leak somewhere.

Nola does have some nasty water. One of the things I immediately noticed when I moved there in '98.

Yeah he is dealing the City of New Orleans. I hope he wins, but I wouldn't bet on it after some of the stories I heard after Katrina.

You're not from these parts I see
I remember hearing of someone who kept getting a water bill from SWB even after the meter had been pulled. Took the city 3 different attempts to come out and verify that the meter was gone.
I'm starting to think this is all part of some shady accounting scheme.
