But we didn’t go back to the moon.

Yep. They got to within 4,070 miles of the moon's surface, or the rough equivalent of the distance from Baton Rouge to the shores of the big island of Hawaii. Or, practically from my doorstep in north AL to the shores of Portugal.

…..why is this moon mission historical?
Because it was the latest and our media has a perverse need to make every new thing grander than it's precedent.

For instance they did one slightly further out swing; yet numerous Apollo missions made double digit trips (maybe 30) around our moon. So we don't hear about total miles traveled. Instead we get miles further way from Earth by about 4 thousand miles. Which is almost a nothing burger of a stat for something like 1.6% greater distance away. But pale's in duration and miles traveled than several other previous missions.

The moon was in a different phase position for the Apollo missions. This was the first time they’ve ever gone behind the moon while it was illuminated.

If you’re going to plagiarize my MoonShit blog you could at least give me some credit or crypto.

To me the bigger take was as someone said yea we shoot further past the moon and use it as a bigger sling shot because the intent never was to land or enter a low orbit for alittle while like Apollo. It was testing equipment and ideas on something we had already already done… that we plan to use for bigger newer space project ideas down the line… like a lunar space base and using the moon and hoping it has enough mass and weight to sling us to Mars… or further… Far cheaper to launch things from lunar gravity than earth gravity.

Didn’t Apollo 13 see the dark side of the moon too?

Actually, several missions in the Apollo program did.

Because they didn’t enter the moon’s orbit. The simply used its gravity to aid in turning and falling back to earth, which sent them farther from the moon than any mission before.

Newsflash: Since the moon is tidally locked, if you've ever seen a crescent or new moon, you too have seen the dark side of the moon...

There is no dark side of the moon, really. Matter of fact, it's all dark.

Half of it is dark at any given time. That area changes throughout the month.

Every Apollo mission that landed on the moon also saw the dark side.

No such thing as a dark side of the moon.

* It was said already. Probably should have read the thread.

Additionally, we were very close to the lunar surface and didn’t get to see the entirety from pole to pole

All Apollo missions had significant anomalies.

13's was of note because of the obvious danger to the astronauts, but all the missions had problems.

Hell, the computer was trying to land Neil on/in a huge crater before he took over and handlanded the craft.
