maybe this will help
quote:
The term "Midwest" in the United States refers to a region in the north-central part of the country, and its name and identity have evolved over time based on geography, settlement, and national expansion.
??? Geographical Roots & Evolution
Originally in the 19th century, "the West" referred to lands west of the original 13 colonies — basically anything beyond the Appalachian Mountains.
As settlers pushed further west, the term "Northwest" was applied to areas around the Great Lakes, especially after the 1787 Northwest Ordinance, which organized what became Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota.
As the U.S. expanded to the Pacific, the original “Northwest” became more central — hence, "Midwest" emerged to reflect its new position in the expanding nation.
?? Why “Midwest” if it’s not really west?
It might seem odd geographically, but it's historical. In the 19th century, this region was the western frontier of the U.S. before the country acquired the far West. So "Midwest" essentially means "the middle of what used to be the western United States."
????? Cultural and Economic Identity
The Midwest is often associated with agriculture, manufacturing, and blue-collar industry — especially in states like Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois.
It’s nicknamed “America’s Heartland” because of its role in food production and its reflection of what many see as core American values: modesty, work ethic, and community.
??States Usually Considered the Midwest:
The U.S. Census Bureau defines the Midwest as 12 states, divided into two subregions:
East North Central:
Ohio
Indiana
Illinois
Michigan
Wisconsin
West North Central:
Minnesota
Iowa
Missouri
North Dakota
South Dakota
Nebraska
Kansas

Some sources say he's accurate. Personally, I think the Mississippi River divides the East from the West. You should tell your friend he's Middle Eastern.

Right
And they absolutely are not

From the interwebs:
“Midwest” was invented in the 19th Century, to describe the states of the old Northwest Ordinance, a term that became outdated once the nation spread to the Pacific Coast.

Why would you think your friend, who's from Michigan, is wrong and you're right?

I guess the same reason you vote democrat? Because he’s wrong.

You being an idiot doesn't make your friend wrong about Michigan, nor does it make me a democrat. Michigan is the Midwest. Always has been. Stop being dumb.

Yet we don’t think of Reno as a Pacific Coast city.
Reno is not near the water so there's that.
Detroit is about 100 miles closer to the Atlantic than the middle point of the country, going straight across from Boston.

I think its common in some of the norther states thats are west of eastern coast states. Ohio, Indiana, Illinois.. I don't think West Virginia people are included in this, but every state between each side of the coastal states that don't consider themselves the south are referred to as midwestern.

Further proof that Missouri isn’t in the sec.

My parents are both from Illinois and I’ve never lived there but I’ve lived in the Midwest and been to Illinois a lot. I’ve never heard the term midwesterner. From the Midwest, yes.
Did you friend use midwesterner or is that your made up word OP?

Michigan is north of the Ohio River, West of the Appalachian Mountains, and East of the Great Plains. How is it NOT Midwest?
