They shouldn't be asking you this either. Someone deciding you're a suitable mate by inquiring about what you do is a disaster.
meh… I’m not big on this denying reality thing

It matters what she looks like and what you do/your resources.

I used to ask it a lot, but I was also genuinely interested for the most part, and also for networking as you said.

It doesn't bother me when I get asked, but I find myself not getting to that question until much later, if at all, in a conversation with a new person. It's conversation 101 stuff. I think a lot of people grow out of it.

I’m genuinely curious when I ask. It’s interesting to me to learn about other professions imo.

Holy shat! You and I posted at the exact same time saying basically the same thing. I manage a group of 8 Product Owners.

I was surprised when I moved back to Louisiana how often people I'm meeting for the first time aske me what I do for a living. It's a lot less common in the northwest.

I suspect some people really want to tell you what they do for a living, but have enough tact to realize it's rude to just blurt it out. So by asking they expect you to reciprocate, which is why I never do.

Again...I get that, but I don't want to talk about my work if I'm sitting at a bar or on vacation. Of we don't have anything to talk about without that, I really don't want to talk to you anyway. It doesn't annoy me cause it's people being nice and sociable. But its a part of the conversation I'd rather just get past

I get this question asked and I don't know how to answer. I'm 47 and retired but I could pass for late 30s, so people don't believe me that I'm retired.

So I am always looking for good responses to give people. Right now I am an unemployed concert bassoonist.

Only someone who is self conscious about their chosen profession would be bothered by something as benign as asking what you do for a living. Chances are they are just trying to see if they have something in common with you in regards to your profession.

Tell them you used to teach 12th grade lit at an all girls high school, but you know, had to leave before the police got involved.

My job is in a very niche field, that isn’t very easy to explain to people who don’t work in healthcare, so it’s not always a joy to get that question. Coupled on top of the fact that I work from home, people probably think it’s some BS job. That being said, I’m still not offended when someone asks me what I do.

Worst is if you answer that honestly then their follow up questions are what did you do, how did you manage to retire so young etc. and it gets real nosy real quick.

maybe worse. So I'm a behavior analyst who specializes in interventions for teens with autism. 1. Noone knows what a behavior analyst is so that's more I gotta explain. 2. If I so much as mention Autism I get the "OMG THATS SO AMAZING...that must be so rewarding!!!!" It's great work but I really don't know what to say to that.... thanks I guess...ots something I get paid pretty well to do, I'm not a Saint. 3. I always get the, "you must have so many interesting stories!" Again...if I'm off the clock I don't want to talk about the shite that goes down at work. And of course...half the time the person I'm talking to has an AMAZING [insert relation here] with autism that I then have to hear the whole background of, at which point I'm then asked my advice on various situations and just like that....I'm at work.

So yea...don't love that ice breaker

I know a guy who is a partner in a fancy pants law firm, for the longest time he answered: “industrial cheese grater”.

I hope he reads this thread and laughs. It was ridiculous, and he sold it 100%.
