I don't tip the construction workers that built my deck, or the electricians that ran new lines for my pool equipment.
No one tips, Your food cost goes up 15-20%. What am I missing?

Neither do I. That is apples and oranges, but you already knew that. Play this like you want...we will just have to agree to disagree.

If we're *expected* to pay a 20% tip no matter how poor the service is, then why not just go ahead and increase food prices and eliminate the tip altogether?

If you order take out are you expected to tip?
Posted on 4/11/17 at 5:27 am to _Hurricane_
I like to tip well
But if they give me any lip they get nothing.
This has happened once in my 33 years on this earth

I think a bad tip says more to the waiter than no tip at all, so I always tip. I just make it known via tip that he/she sucked.

The anti tipping crowd seems to be the type of assholes who blame the waiter for any and everything that goes wrong
Reminds me of the time I was waiting tables and we had a power outage so we couldn't use our computers and had to write tickets by hand. Of course i had customers who blamed ME for this. I bet the OP would have joined in with them.

You're acting like being a server is some terrible thing that no outsider could possibly have any perspective on.
I still have nightmares to this day about waiting tables and its been 2 and a half years since I last had the job
I dont think you realize just how much has to be going right in order for you to get the service you feel you deserve.
Believe it or not waiting on you is not the only job a server has
Apart from waiting the tables a server generally has running duties in the back, such as refilling ice or restocking condiments, as well as running food - you don't just run the food of your tables, if there is a hot tray that is up its whoever is closest to the tray to run it to the table
So if its a busy night, you are assigned 4 tables, and there are lots of trays to be run, and you are assigned to the running duty of refilling the Iced Tea and its out, you probably aren't going to get the ultra snappy service you feel like you deserve. Oh shite my table wants Dr. Pepper and the syrup is out, better go to the back to change it, oh shite I can't find a box of Dr. Pepper syrup, oh there it is, now I have to install it, thats done, oh shite there are half a dozen trays that need to be run, better run one, get back to the kitchen, oh shite the Kitchen told me they are out of pasta and its going to be 30 minutes until the new batch is ready, need to go ask my table if they want something else, and while I am heading back to the table another table flags me down and asks for a new margarita because the one they have has the wrong tequila in it
Some of you cocksuckers need to realize that YOU ARENT THE ONLY TABLE THE SERVER HAS.

I thought better of you. People like you go in looking for an excuse not to tip.
THIS... I had an a-hole do the shite that they did on Cheers, with the 5 $1 bills laid out on the table and he told me he would take one away each time I made a mistake
I just kind of gave him a look, and he took one away because of that.
I actually gave him WORSE service because I didn't give a shite, if his bill was more than $30 it would have been a shitty tip anyway, I am not going to be manipulated like that for a whopping $5 tip
Idiots like that are looking for reasons not to tip you
Posted on 4/11/17 at 6:54 am to _Hurricane_
I'd bet OP uses this as an excuse to not tip so he can save his money. Probably does this all the time

Just go to McDonalds, bro. No tips necessary. Errybody gets paid minimum wage.

So by that logic a waiter is the same as a McDonald's cashier, who makes minimum wage.
I was not implying that at all. My point was correcting a poster who said he still tipped bad servers at least 5% so they would still make minimum wage. This notion is based on incorrect information as there are laws enforced by the Department of Labor that say if a server does not make enough tips for their hourly wage to meet the minimum, then the restaurant is responsible for making up the difference.
In no way was I implying that wait staff is on par with that of a McDonalds cashier. In fact, if you look at the post I made before that, I point out that you should always tip at least 10% with bad service because it unfairly penalizes bussers and more behind the scenes staff that get paid from the waiter's tips.

Small rant. I hate it when they try to take your order without writing it down. It didn't impress me and you have a higher chance of messing it up.
