I just hate when they take my order and I don't see them again until they deliver the check and try to chat like we are old friends.

Maybe if you spent less time kissing arse when you deliver the check, you could give people the service they're paying for.

It's quite clear in this thread there are individuals who should just stop going to restaurants because clearly you cannot afford it.

People who justify not tipping are cowards.

Had this experience the other day. Absolutely shite waitress at Byronz on Perkins. She was aloof and made several silly mistakes like forgetting lemon with water twice(never got it) and mustard for the fries(had to ask twice). She also tried to pick up my GF's plate before she was done with her salad. Her response, "sorry hun."
If she had been humble, she would have gotten ~22-25%, but she sucked and was a bitch so she got 15%.

TLDR My GF and I have been conditioned to tip shitty waiters 15% while good ones get ~22-25%.

Sounds like you can't afford to eat out at restaurants but do anyway.

This is one of the most incredibly stupid things I've ever seen posted here.

If the service is good I tip usually at 20-30%. IF the service sucks I may leave $5-$10.

People that can't afford to eat out don't eat out.

Some servers don't deserve a tip but I always give them one.

I have never worked in a restaurant so I am ignorant to this, but why aren't restaurants required to pay minimum wage? I get tired of hearing how little waiters and waitresses make. Why become a server if you know the money sucks? Obviously that's the only thing some people can do, but I am just curious about the minimum wage bit.

Edit: I realize food would be more expensive if waiters made minimum wage, but that's not my question. I am wondering why they were never required to be paid minimum wage.

Going and sitting at a restaurant isn't a necessity either. But you chose to do it and should tip something. Did they at least provide the service you requested of them?

I'm willing to bet this service wasn't nearly as bad as you claim

That's probably a lot of it. It's one or more of these combinations is my assumption-
Can't afford it
Miserable fcks who aren't going to be happy no matter what
Too dumb to know how to order and act normal in a restaurant
Choose bad restaurants most of the time

And no I'm not a waiter and never will be. Sure there are the occasional bad service situations, but I haven't had but one situation like this in the past three or four years.

Carry on. These threads always bring out the stupids.

The kitchen routinely makes less than servers.

Tips oil the machine. I live in a small town where you are going to have to eat fast food for variety. I toss a dollar in with every order. I've been 11th in line at McDonald's and gotten my food first. I've had them tell me to sit down and they bring my food to me.

A dollar goes a long way.

I had a case that required me to stay in Dallas at the Westin Galleria. I had a beat up Lumina with 400,000 miles on it. I tipped and was nice to the valets, so they left my car out front with the Maseratis and Ferraris (the show off cars they leave out front).

If you regularly go to some place, tip well. You will be repaid.

Some people go out to eat and all of the sudden become the Queen of England when it comes to service. If you want to say I don't tip because I'm a tightwad, I'd actually respect that. It's the circular logic of the people who become drunk with power and feel like it's their obligation to teach someone a lesson that's ridiculous.

I always tip, but it's based on the overall experience of the server. Example: My wife and I went to a very nice-casual restaurant that gets rave reviews in a part of town we both like. The food was prepared horribly, and despite telling the server we didn't want any accommodations to the check, she discounted the ticket. She was great throughout, and apologized even though we assured her it was not due to anything she had done.

I tipped her 45%. I simply added the discount she gave me onto her tip. It wasn't her fault that the chef sucked preparing our meal.

If the food is great and the service is sketchy, I'll still tip, but it just won't be the normal 20-25% I always tip. It will be more in the 10-15% range. I don't think I've ever, "not tipped".

You just tip not as well.

Great - 20%+
Good - 20%
Average - 15%
Bad - 10%

Good service I tip 20%, great ~25%. If it's really bad service I give 10%. Only once did I tip $0. 20 minutes to get to my table, took order and drinks all at once. Didn't see him again until the check which he just dropped and picked up without a word on his way to another table. Plus there was a hair in my wife's food. We both worked in the business when we were younger and neither of us would have expected a tip had we pulled that shite.

It's already been explained to you many times that your tip often goes to more than the server. So, by not tipping, you may be fricking over the bartender, bus boy, hostess, bar back, etc.

Your shite attitude plays a major role in your server having an attitude.

But yeah, go on a message board and brag about how you don't tip for bad service. Class act.

I tip reasonably well, but I have yet to see a logical explanation (other than greed) that a waiter should be tipped 20% (or whatever %) on the full cost of an already outrageously over-priced $200+ bottle of wine when the waiter did nothing more than he or she would have done with a $50 bottle of wine. They open it, they pour it, they remove the empty bottle.

And for you dumb fricks that argue, "if you can't afford it, don't go" bullshite, I ordered three bottles of wine at $180 a pop in Vegas last week with a client, paying out another $120 in tip on those, which is fricking ridiculous. In the space of two hours, the waiter earned $60 an hour on just my table just on the wine, alone. Coupled with the food, he earned in excess of $120 an hour and had two other tables, so was probably pulling down about $350+ an hour. After sharing with other staff, he was probably clearing $250+ an hour.

Now probably, the waiter gets only about 20 productive hours a week like that, so at $5000 a week ($250,000 a year) it's hard to feel sorry for him if he gets tipped less every now and then.

Obviously, this isn't the same as tipping at your ordinary Saltgrass, BJ's, Pappadeaux's, etc... The point is, there does come a point where the tipping is excessive and out of control. There's not a single waiter out there worth paying more than an anesthesiologist.

To tip nothing is shite. Servers have to pay out 3% of total sales in tip share. With no tip it's like they are paying to serve you.

Not every place pools tips.

Secondly, I'm so damn awesome they should be paying for the privilege of serving me.
