Safe to say, I'll never pay for a dinner where wine costs $200.

Again. I don't tip only if the service is terrible.
If the service is that bad, you should request a manager. Sounds like you're just a poor cheap frick that doesn't want to tip $4 on your $20 bill at TGIFridays.

Is the service 4 times better? Did it require 4 times more work?

My wife used to be a waitress and opened my eyes to a lot of shite. The problems are usually with the hostess stand or the kitchen. Hostesses will double/triple sit tables and it will take forever to even get a drink order put in.(not exactly the waiters fault) Or the kitchen will frick something up. I have had a few times where it seemed like the waitress was going to smoke cigarettes for 10 minutes at a time or a guy who didn't write down our order, came back in 20 minutes and had forgot to put it in. In those situations, frick them, they're bad servers and need to find new jobs.

It's typically pretty easy to tell when the server sucks or when someone else is the problem.

It's quite clear in this thread there are individuals who should just stop going to restaurants because clearly you cannot afford it.
i'll tip good service properly..
shitty service accordingly.....
I have never not left a tip... although twice i left a penny including at a restaurant that a good friend owned.. and then told him why when he jumped my shite

So instead of acting like an adult, requesting to see a manager--who would have more than likely comped your bill--you decided to act like a self righteous arse and drive home a point to a server you didn't like?
Let me guess, you're that guy who chugs down 15 to 16 sweet teas or diet cokes during a meal and gets pissed if you have to wait on a refill?

The prospect of a tip encourages good service. Although last time I ate at Ryan's buffet, I didn't leave a tip and the waitress literally followed me out the door. That kind of behavior is unwarranted in any situation.
9 times out of 10 though, I will leave a tip at a restaurant.

This is very true.

Usually shite service is due to a shite customer.

To tip nothing is shite. Servers have to pay out 3% of total sales in tip share. With no tip it's like they are paying to serve you.

I'm amazed at how common bad service is for some of you. I eat at restaurants on average about 8 times a week and can't remember the last time I had bad service.
Maybe the server isn't the problem here

I wasn't responding to you specifically.
I was just making a general comment about how people get so carried away about determining what someone has "earned" once the bill comes. People blow money on superfluous crap all the time but will scrutinize the hell out of a few bucks when deciding on a tip.

Exactly Yellowfin. Maybe I'm just lucky and choose good restaurants. More than likely though it's knowing how to act normally in a restaurant and treat the staff with respect.

There sure are a lot of whiny entitled waiters in here.

LOL
Eating at Ryan's.
And then not leaving any tip at all. OT quality stuff right here

You really shouldn't eat out if "the penny message" is a rational option to you.

Every waiter/waitress I know claims to make bank. I think they are lying.

10-4
I like to tip well but if a server brings some negative attitude to my night out they can frick off.
they should treat every customer as a new day.
