Carmax is a one price, take it or leave it.
I'd probably list their prices as average or maybe a bit higher than you could haggle some places down.
But, it's pretty painless and from what little experience I have had, they never pressured.

Or better yet, use email and don’t even bother going there until they agree on a price.

Anyone ever bought a car from CarMax?
I bought from them about 12 years ago. I had my financing already taken care of. They got the car I wanted shipped to my local location. I walked in test drove, wrote a check and walked out. Probably only an hour or so at the place.
Last car I bought, almost 3 years ago, did everything online. Walked into the dealership at 6:30, drove my new car home at 8:45.

Never let them know you have your own financing lined up. They more they think you will finance with their preferred lenders the more they will be willing to go down on the price.
I’ve been known to play dumb and start asking them what kind of rates they have and payment amounts etc pretty early on in the process. They really get mad when we go to the finance office with everything and I tell them to give my bank a call to confirm the financing. I also never go shop in the vehicle I might be trading in. I take the newest or most expensive vehicle we have at the time, and when the trade talk starts I play the I’m not sure if I’m going to trade or sell privately.
The sleazy salesman thinks they will make it up on financing deals and that he will low ball me on the trade and I usually walk away with a better price.
I have also found I get better deals the later in the day I go. I think it’s like anything, the closer to closing you get the more they are willing to give a little to get out of there. My record is signing the final paperwork at 11 pm.
I flat out refuse to pay anything above the actual transport costs of having the vehicle delivered to the dealer. The 20 min they spend de-plastic wrapping and topping off the tank before delivery is not as special as they make it sound.
It’s a game, you can’t beat them but you can level the playing field a little.
Edit: forgot, bring the kids. Not the wife but only the kids. They get crazy after a few hours of “dealing” and you can always push the, well I think they are getting tired and I might have to come back tomorrow and work on this some more angle too. You do have to make sure you are able to hold it together and not get distracted while little John and Jane are Wigging out all over the showroom.

I had a great service manager at one dealership. He was super nice and really helped me out on the cost of a repair. Then he tried to get me to join a multi-level marketing scam. Next time I went there, he was gone. I hope he was fired for soliciting customers.

He’s losing money on the deal. You’re taking food off his table

Found a car that checked most of our boxes for a pretty good price. Sales person and I text and he sends me an estimate for the car, which includes a $1,995 "reconditioning fee". I asked what that was for and he basically said it's what we charge to get the car ready for the lot. I replied that it should be built into the price and not an add on fee, so I wasn't going to pay it, and he said 'in Texas we have to price it on the website right away, then add the fee after it's reconditioned.'
I just said 'thanks' and let it go, but it's that kind of bull shite that really just makes me angry.
sounds very shady
I just bought a Truck from Lubbock Texas online and I live in NC...had it shipped for 1100.00
it went pretty smooth
only do this if you are looking for something very specific...which I was

So you make your wife deal with that instead of manning up and doing it yourself? Yea you’re real cool man

Do it all online and even get the price, that way you only step in the dealership to sign the papers

It’s a struggle to get dealers to negotiate online. Or even over the phone. They’re desperate to get you in the dealership bc they think the deal is secured once you get in there

I purchased 8 fleet vehicles over the last year. Super duty’s with sticker prices in low 60’s. It seems that sticker minus any advertised rebates minus $3000 is the average price we get. It’s nice dealing with fleet managers and not the usual salesman bullshite.
Also, if it’s not on the sticker it’s the dealership trying to scam you out of a couple thousand bucks

I've done this the last 3 vehicles for the wife and kids buying vehicles in Texas. Save $3k or more for the similar vehicles in Louisiana.

It is illegal for them to charge a reconditioning fee.

Yeah they do but if you've done your research and know the cost you can negotiate by telling them well this dealership is offering this and that... they crumble after awhile

Know what you want to pay before talking to the salesman. Check out the trade-in value of your present car and know your tax rate going in. I bought a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT 4X4 quad cab listed a $37000 with 48,000 miles for $31,500 and got my trade-in value as well after getting low balled by $2,500 at the start of the deal. Hold your ground and tell them they get one shot or your not coming back. Bolton Ford in Lake Charles found that out the hard way. Bought at Mike Smith in Sulphur.
