I hate car shopping

Found a car that checked most of our boxes for a pretty good price. Sales person and I text and he sends me an estimate for the car, which includes a $1,995 "reconditioning fee". I asked what that was for and he basically said it's what we charge to get the car ready for the lot. I replied that it should be built into the price and not an add on fee, so I wasn't going to pay it, and he said 'in Texas we have to price it on the website right away, then add the fee after it's reconditioned.'
I just said 'thanks' and let it go, but it's that kind of bullshite that really just makes me angry.

Keep calling around until you find someone cutting the deal you want. You should go in to this expecting to deal with shady bullshite.

You need to research and have the price in mind before you get there. Tell them they can add or subtract whatever fees they want, this what you are willing to pay.
Car dealers make there money off of getting a couple hundred to sometimes thousands of dollars more off people that don’t want to argue. Go prepared and let them know you are not a customer that plays those games.
Or better yet, use email and don’t even bother going there until they agree on a price.

I've got everything lined out: pre-approved, budget's in order, know what car/features I'm looking for, and most of it is out of town, so it's over e-mail/phone/text, it just bugs the shite out of me the games they try to play- the first quote he gave me was also $1,100 higher than the website, because they 'just reduced the price last night- lucky me'

Pick a few dealers later this month and string them along until the end of the month when they get desperate.

Just find out what the supplier price is on any given vehicle, offer them that, and be prepared to walk away. I buy a lot of fleet vehicles at work and have never been able to get a vehicle much under that price at all. They may be bullshitting, but they say they only make $50 or $100 on a vehicle at that price.

My wife will research her vehicles and shop the hell out of them online email etc...
Last few have come from Texas and I’ve never heard of a reconditioning fee.
But the last time she bought she found what she wanted and the right price at Leson on the Westbank. I drive her down and sit in my truck-because I don’t deal with car salesman, with the dog.
She came out with salesman and he pointed out the crack all the way across the windshield and told her she could get it replaced and they would pay for it. Then he opened the door and I saw her head tilt back sharply. After a few choice words she spun on her heel and walked to the truck and got in. Said let’s go-salesman tried to tell her it was a brand new Suburban with a bad windshield, 12k miles on it and whoever put the miles was a smoker. Said all they ever did was drive it to lunch.
That was funny as shite and to listen to her rip the general manager a new a-hole on the way back to BR was nice to hear.
When I’m ready to buy I just tell her what I want and she finds it and deals with them and I couldn’t do better. It’s a pleasantry I enjoy in my marriage.

I don’t really need a new truck but would like to get something new. I just can’t make myself go to the dealership and go through their process.

Wrong. Numerous used car dealers have no price listed on the Internet for their cars...just a "call for price"
I'm assuming it is a used car since I can't imagine spending $2K to get a new car ready for the lot.

Screw them, if you think it is a fair price find it elsewhere. They play a shitty game and expect you to cave because you have made an effort to get there.

Tell him you will take the offer and shop it with dealers in 500 miles. 90% will deliver the car with no charge.
I haven't bought from the dealer I test drove a car with in 28 years. I always find a better deal somewhere else. Bought a Caddy in Texas in December. No reconditioning fee.

Trade in yours for blue book + reconditioning fee. Just run it through the car wash first.

Anyone ever bought a car from CarMax?

Car salesmen are probably the slimiest thing that ever slithered out of the devil's anus.
