Same here. We don't allow him to have his phone upstairs and that helped a ton. We also have parental locks on apps and access as well as times when only call/text are active on his phone. As he earns more freedom we'll adjust.

Good luck with him not having a phone. Yes they are bad but the ease of access is important. Does your kid play sports? (Might need it to remind you to bring his cleats as an example.
Might want to be able to get in touch with him at a friends house. He may need it to contact females his age.
No phone is going to make him a dork.

My parents never purchased me a phone or a car. I didn't get my first cell phone until I joined the Army and didn't get my first car until after I did a year in Afghanistan.

When I see 5 year olds on iPads all I can do is shake my head.

Yeah. Cell phones for kids suck.

I’m leaning toward a smart watch - they can respond simply to texts and make calls. Plus some can be used as locators.

I agree. Poor parenting decision at 12.

almost every girl and abotu 3 or 4 of the boys in my sons 6th grade class have phones. We are not close to getting him one but its not htat insane at 12. at that age they have after school practices and other things.

we have no problem not getting him one and he doesnt care either but 12-14 is when 99% of them have them

as far as waiting until they get drivers liscense, 16 is too late imo.

and ftr youtube shorts or reels on the other social media sites are just as bad as tiktok. tictok is worse though and 100% messes with their heads because they are not mature enough to handle that.

It’s mainly for calling and texting when he needs to but I told him he couldn’t use the phone during the school week but being he was out of school for Thanksgiving week,

So how about a phone that just calls and texts?

He apologized and he is back to how he was before getting the phone. I didn’t realize how much a phone could change a kid like that.
There is a direct correlation between how much time my kids spend on the phone and how much of an a-hole they are........

It is poison. Of all that bullshite on the phones what drives me crazy is Youtube videos. We had a dust up over phones a month ago and I took all of them away for two weeks. Off and in a drawer. It was a great reset. Now we have them turn em in at 9PM, and they cant use them in their rooms or bathrooms.

The 13 yo would go into the bathroom and live with it if you let him .

If I may offer some advice as a 30 year practicing faux counselor. The hook if you will of a cell phone is the vibration mode. Kids frequently insert the phone into an orifice after asking a friend to repeatedly dial the number. I suggest disabling vibration mode, super glueing his bung hole shut or no phone at all. Also wash your hands. You have Turd on them. You will want to send your son to a solid religious reorientation camp. Shalom and You are welcome

I'm in the same situation. My son is 12 and he's going to need a way to communicate with us when he starts school football. I'll need to know when to come get him (I'll be coaching my younger sons) from practice. ALL his friends have them, but I think we're going the smart watch route.

Awful idea. They can get a phone when they get a drivers license. That shite rots their brains and the TikTok crap is brainwashing software

I was in 8th grade when I got my first cell phone but it was a Nokia that could only text/call with limited minutes and texts except on weekends. Smart phones didn’t come out for a few more years

It’s amazing people figured this out before cell phones existed. Such as asking the coach about what time they’d be finished and just being there.

My dad used to just come watch the whole practice because he enjoyed it

Parents certainly need to measure when a kid needs that kind of a product in their hands.
