I was going to come shite on your thread but you are absolutely right about the slot machines.

I do a little sports betting. Roulette is fun. Play poker a few times a month.

It’s pretty harmless in small doses. As long as you’re not a total dumbass and are capable of setting a limit and sticking to it. My mom will go occasionally with a couple hundred bucks that she’s willing light on fire, and when she’s done she’s done.

I personally never got the appeal. But like with most things, a little personal responsibility goes a long way.

Dopamine hits.

Same as sex. Drugs. Disney World. Video Poker. Online games. FB.

All of it is by design to keep you wanting the next hit and that makes them money.

At a youth hostel in Iceland, we played poker for grains of rice. There were at least six different nationalities involved.
The winner was clueless but lucky.
I haven't wanted to play poker since then.

The only way it’s profitable is if you can count cards at blackjack and you have enough bankroll to survive variance and a calm demeanor to handle back off heat.

Also learning the probability numbers at poker like Hold ‘Em and doing proper bet sizing at tournaments. Even then you’re not playing the house and the house is still making money off the rake.

Only gambling I ever enjoyed was horse racing for the drinks, food, and lol's, and poker. Rest of the dice and cards and marbles and sports betting is for suckers.

I don't either. But- there's a huge difference between gambling and gambling addiction. Lots of people gamble occasionally and consider it entertainment. I guess it's kind of like the recreational beer drinker vs the raging alcoholic.....

But the people who pull out hundreds and feed them into the machines every two minutes are sad sad people

True story. There was an old man who came into a neighborhood bar in Arabi every day and he would sit at the video poker machines and play a few dollars as he drank his cold beer. He had his spending limit and once reached he left if he lost.

Well, the old man died and his wife collected a modest life insurance policy of $10K. Everybody knew the old man was married but nobody ever saw the wife with him. Not long after he died she started showing up at the bar and would get a few drinks while she DUMPED a few hundred at a time in the poker machines. This went on for a few months and she quit showing up since she had pissed it all away.

The people in the bar who knew her tried to talk sense into her, but she just kept dropping 20's in the machine like she'd never run out.

Slot machines never made sense to me. But the games with human interaction are fun for an entertaining night. Like anything else, you have to set loss limits and play in moderation.

Got on a roll on a full craps table for 20+ minutes without crapping out. That’s exciting. It’s easy understand why people keep coming back.

Outside a casino:
Friendly poker games are a lot of fun.

I bet on sports occasionally just to make games interesting. It’s also like a test to see just how smart I am with my opinions about teams and players.

But I’m far from a daily gambler. It’s a very periodic recreational hobby.

I just shake my head at obviously poor or lower working class people dropping $20 or more on scratch off tickets. That’s just me.

I have the money and don’t waste a dime on that shite. But hey, that’s just me.

Once had a friend that went to rehab and got off heroin. But once he was clean he would go to the casino and play blackjack about 3-4 times a week and spend his money there.

This! Craps are the best odds for gamblers if played correctly (1.41% for house on pass and come bets).
