That’s what happened here. The person missed 130ish hours in 5 months 
Mostly Mondays and Fridays but other days sprinkled in.

I’m in the office for 2-3 hours each day. Aside from that I’m at job sites.
If you can’t show up to work in construction you aren’t going to have a job for long, no matter where you work.

Mine is on my right knee as well. I’m thinking I might have done something to the meniscus while out running a week ago. Guess I might be burning up my sick leave too.

Hopefully it's not as bad. I had a "bucket handle" meniscus tear, so they had to stretch my knee apart, flip the torn part back over and stitch it in a few places to the good part... then reconstruct the ACL.
It was about the worst case scenario other than having the meniscus replaced with a synthetic cartilage.

I normally take sick days if I’m really sick or have a doctor or dental appointment. I have been known to take a mental health day or two but that’s it.

I have two kids under 6. I can’t build up any sick leave.

How or why people think they can take repeatedly take off Monday/Friday is ridiculous.
Fast food life is rough. When you get older and work a career job, you're trusted to know when you shouldn't come to work. You can be sick enough to where you shouldn't go to work, but not sick enough to where you need to see a doctor.

You know how it goes. Fake it early, then ask company to give them more sick/personal time off when they need it for real by May. They are more important then everyone else. I see this at my company and unless it death in family they will work without pay. This slows down foolishness. We've given days for family death so it they need it they can use it. No death in immediate family, not days off.

Worked with a guy who called in sick the day after every payday. Everyone knew that he was getting too high to work as soon as he had money in his pocket.
I asked his supervisor why he didn't adjust the schedule so that the guy was off on those days (since they had to call in someone every time to cover his shift). Supervisor said, "frick that guy." Eventually a manager with a brain showed up and fired the druggy.

you do realize when you get laid off they no longer let you take those or cash them in right?

This is the main reason why I don't really use sick days to go fishing or something like that. You might really need them one day.
I couldn't care less what others do with theirs. If they get jammed up and have no days left that's their issue.

You must have fired them for being lazy and stupid.
Even if they were faking, a 30 minute trip to an urgent care plus 20 dollars will get them a note saying they have anything from a mild cold to Ebola.

I try to divide my life into two categories, MPs and SEPs. An MP is my problem. An SEP is Somebody Else's Problem.
Unless they work for me, or the absence affects my team, why do I care if they want to play sick in January and take a chance on the rest of the year? That is an SEP.
Also, it could be that Januarys just suck, and a lot of people get genuinely depressed by the grey, cloudy days. If that is "sick" to them, then so be it.
ETA: Personally, I've taken off about two sick days in the past twenty years, and one of those days was officially a holiday anyway.
