It aids the accountants who factor sick days into the workload. This folks who take a bunch of sick days and it wasn't prefacyored, doesn't help formulating a years-out budget plan.

Our retirement medical hinged on the amount of sick leave you had on the books at the time you retired. 8 hours= 1 month of retirement medical coverage. Yes there were people who still abused their sick leave and unfortunately, there were many of us who came to work no matter how sick we were (especially the last 5 years prior to retirement).

Yeah, your workload can easily be doubled when people off. That’s why there are stringent rules about when you can take off. People use sick days to get around those rules.

Yep. Smart companies will just give you the entire set of days as “vacation days” and allow you to use them how you please. Saves a lot more of a head ache and reduces number of call ins.
I had a company refuse to pay me because I told them the day before that I would be using a sick day and wouldn’t be able to make it in. They said because I didn’t call the day of, they didn’t consider it a sick day so they can’t pay me. So I learned to say frick them and not tell them anything until 8:01 the day of.

Some people have trouble making it into work for whatever reason. Sometimes it’s their own illness, sometimes someone else’s. Sometimes not illness related but something came up that’s beyond their control. Usually they just have a lot of baggage in general.

My company starts everyone off with 3 weeks PTO and it goes up from there. I've got 7 weeks PTO a year now. They're problem, though, is they want you to schedule all time off ahead of time. If you call in sick, they consider it an "occurrence". 3 occurrences and you get a written warning. Doesn't matter if I have 7 weeks PTO. frick that. I just go to work sick and hope I get everyone there sick. I haven't called in sick once in 10+ years either. I don't abuse sick days, but I'm a rarity.

I changed my policy to a similar model around 4 years ago. I don't keep up with sick days. If you need a day for sick / personal / whatever - take it. My other employees will cover for you and take care of your responsibilities. They police themselves. As soon as they found out someone was juking the system - they turned on them. The employee will straighten up quick or they're fired. When I had sick days, there were 11 employees. Changed policy and now there's only 8. Higher productivity with good / great employees and everyone ( company included ) makes more money and is happier.
ETA - I originally did 6 sick days, 5 personal days, and 5 vacation days for a total of 16. The people that are still here average 12 missed days per year. Those that were asked to leave averaged 19 absences per year.

I used to feel bad about taking sick days when I was legitimately sick because there was always some old hag around shaming everyone if they did. But frick that. I earned those days through work/benefits. And right now the state is talking about cutting out retirees holding on to their sick days to cash out.
Absolutely no good reason to sit on those days if your arse is miserable at work, getting everyone else sick, and not getting shite done anyway.

My only issue with people like that is how often that group will whine and bitch about how the system does them wrong when they don’t get special consideration when they legit get sick with no PTO left to cover it.

That is what we do...PTO.
Although last year with some of the new sick time laws AZ passed they just started adding 40 hours a year of sick time in addition to the PTO time we already have.
And some people may have to use their sick time to care for family members who are sick(kids, elderly parents, etc).

People that come to work legitimately sick are assholes. People that call in sick regularily but are never actually sick) are bigger assholes. Playing hooky, nowadays referred to as a mental health day apparently, is ok a couple times of year as long as you’re not screwing over people that rely on you.
Government job, fast sick time accrual, rolls over annually, can be exchanged for years towards retirement. Hours over 40 go to comp time bank. Hooky days come from comp bank. Pay isn’t great, work isn’t appreciated, and literally everyone sucks. But hey, your tax dollars at work.
