Because food prices would increase and less people would eat out leading to less jobs and less of an economic activity that is inherently local.

Also, tipping is probably the most free market exercise we have. A server ends up running a de facto small business unto themselves. Profit is directly related to performance.

I made of ton of money in college as a bartender/server. Putting forth just a little effort and being responsive to the customer goes a long way.

Am i reading laws wrong? How do they do it in areas with a $15 min wage already?

If the server’s monthly wages plus claimed tips don’t equal minimum wage then the owner has to supplement until it does.

Tipping is easy. Let's say you are at your table for an hour. Count how many tables the waiter has. Now divide the number of tables by the minimum wage - 2.13 an hour.
There is your tip.

My beef is I would like an occasional "you're welcome" every once in awhile rather than no problem

I hear this quite a bit. For me, I couldn't give a rat's arse whether they say "You're welcome" or "No problem." Just perform the job. Perform it well. You do that, and I don't care if I even get a "Hello" out of you. Now obviously some will say that the common courtesy is part of the job, but to me it's soooo much less important than actually doing what you're actually paid for: Taking my order, making sure everything is correct, checking back periodically to fill drinks, and bringing me the check in a timely fashion. That's my idea of perfect service right there.

Only thing that is worst, is an expo or cook who constantly complains about how much more waiters make than them, but still chooses to expo or cook instead...

The worst is waiters that expect to make their best night take every single night. Like bro if you could make $500+/night every single shift your dumbass wouldn’t be the one with that job.

That's weird. The tip I leave is based completely on the service they provide, and not one bit on the cheap food.

My pet peeve is people who choose to wait long term, but then complain about how terrible it is as a career.

If you've been waiting tables for over 5 years, and you still haven't been offered an assistant manager position at least, you must not be that good at your job, at all

I can tell you from my bartending days, servers and bartenders make significantly more than managers.

You subsidize the owner either way, genius.
If you don't like the system, use your power of individual choice and don't eat at restaurants.

If you didnt tip, the same or greater amount of money would be added in to your bill. Probably greater b/c most service industry people don't get benefits. If they are paid "a living wage" and the tip system went away you will now be susbsidizing their higher wage/health/dental/vacation time/etc.

The tip system creates incentive for the server to perform well and gives the customer the ability to reward or punish based on service.
American as frick. Great system, especially for those who are hungry to make money.
There would be no incentive for anyone to be a waiter or bartender without tipping.

Eats out and only cares about cheap food. OP is definitely poor and fat. Explains anger with the staff in the restaurant and unhappiness in life.

I've worked offshore in the Gulf on tugs and supply boats, and I've waited tables in a high-end restaurant. The latter left me more exhausted by far.

I agree with this totally. I also know that the restaurants where the average check is the highest is also where the average consumer is the biggest a-hole. Can any of y'all imagine waiting tables in a high dollar place in DC and having to put up with customers like Nancy Pelosi all shift long every damn night?
