Simply amazing how they can replace and expand miles of elevated roadway through an urban setting in a year - ahead of schedule.

How did they do this? Did they put both direction on one side while redoing the other?

The contractor, Johnson Brothers Corp., gets a nice $15 million dollar bonus for finishing it before the end of January.

Nope. Both sides were closed. They set up detours. It actually went a lot smoother than I anticipated it to, but I don't have to drive through there very often. Glad it's back open though.

Nope, they completely shut down 59/20 through downtown Birmingham. Detours were the only way through. If you were just passing through Birmingham, you could bypass it by taking Interstate 459, which goes around south of Birmingham and rejoins interstates 59 and 20 beyond the construction zone.

Some less than appealing scenery on that detour.

Hey, I worked on this project! Some extremely smart people involved, from the design engineer to Johnson Bros. on the ground doing the work.

On the way back from the Peach Bowl we missed the bypass and went through Birmingham on I20. Big mistake. With all the detours my phone map was almost useless. It was a nightmare getting through there at midnight. We should have just turned around and went back to the loop.

We're even supposed to get a northern bypass eventually.

Maybe my great-grandchildren will get to drive on it.

Louisiana sucks.

Hell a segment of the interstate fell down after that fire in Georgia and they had that shite back up in a week.

God could you imagine Baton Rouge with I10 shut down and nothing but detours to get through

This would be more like shutting down I10 in New Orleans and detouring everyone to I610.

I just want to know when and why they changed it from "20/59" to "59/20".

I think Baton Rouge is planning a bridge or a loop or something.

People seem to think it won’t be on schedule.

I am legit surprised that they finished early. That seems to never happen.
