The contractor, Johnson Brothers Corp., gets a nice $15 million dollar bonus for finishing it before the end of January.
My FIL who lives in Alabama was telling me about this. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the contract called for the contractor to get something like $1 million per day for every day finished ahead of schedule but also a disincentive for a $1 million per day fine for every day running over the scheduled date of completion.
This feat simply couldn't be accomplished in Louisiana. It takes our corrupt politicians a minimum of 5-7 years just to get a project started (that's to fleece all the taxpayers to pay someone's BIL, college buddy, etc). Once started, it is a minimum of 2 years simply to just do something as relatively simple as expand 2 miles of Interstate/roads

I am legit surprised that they finished early. That seems to never happen.
Especially considering the major interchange a couple miles up the road was over a year late upon completion. Completely different contractors on that one I believe.

Simply amazing how they can replace and expand miles of elevated roadway through an urban setting in a year - ahead of schedule.
I drove it this weekend when it opened just to check it out. I was highly skeptical when they originally announced the plan, but they pulled it off and ahead of schedule. I'll be curious to see how this actually impacts traffic flow. They still need to repave up to the replaced bridges. They are supposed to turn the space under the bridges into some kind of greenway/community space. That's a year away.

I'm curious to see the impacts on 459 tomorrow after we get past today's light traffic due to the MLK holiday. A big part of ALDOT's campaign was encouraging drivers to use 459 to navigate Birmingham as opposed to using the downtown detours.

Meanwhile, it takes 1 1/2 years to widen a turn lane in Tuscaloosa.

This is what happens when you have competent state transportation workers, AND competent local contractors.
In LA, we need 4 years to build an interstate exit.
Also, I noticed they were reopening lanes at 9 pm on a weekend. That would never work in LA, where apparently road builders can't work weekends and can't work in the dark. I guess they don't make lights here...
I don't think LA uses bonuses or fines either for early/late completion.

Interstate 459,
My go to when I could. I hated driving 20/59 through downtown.

It was a nightmare getting through there at midnight.
Glad you guys are still alive

It may take a few days for that impact to be seen as people learn it's back open and re-adjust their commutes. 459 South between 280 and 65 has been a parking lot almost every afternoon since they closed the downtown section.

459 had been a damn nightmare since the closing. I’m ecstatic it’s open again. I drive Trussville to Bessemer every day for work.

And here in LA we were told 5-7 years for replacing a 5 mile stretch of I-10 that is not raised and has 1 over pass in an area where the houses don’t exactly but up to the interstate

I just want to know when and why they changed it from "20/59" to "59/20".
This has become a heated debate about which is correct or which it should be. "20/59" rolls off the tongue better, but I think "59/20" is actually correct.

This should help alleviate traffic issues throughout the Birmingham metro.

You talking about the I-65/I-22 interchange? Yeah, I drive through there everyday and it seemed like it was never going to be completed.

So glad I don't hit this. I only have a 9 mile commute and it's all on 459. I can't wait to have it get back to normal (not that it was really bad for me).

That's the one. I almost want to say they were nearly 2 years late on it, but I could be wrong.

God could you imagine Baton Rouge with I10 shut down and nothing but detours to get through
That wouldn't be possible so it's kind of a bad comparison. It's not fun to imagine either

It was something like that I believe. It was ridiculous. It was not as complex as the 59/20 project, but still took forever.
