Food would be a big issue
Yea, thinking of where I live, it's just nothing but houses upon houses in the burbs.

Obviously not saying I'd feel just as safe as I do now, but I think given the circumstances, I'd feel like I'm in a pretty safe spot as I assuming my neighborhood and surrounding hoods would come together to form a community.

But, I just don't really know where the food would come from for these entire communities.

Call me crazy but my first move is to go to the pet store (a couple blocks away) and buy/take as much as I can carry them keep going back until nothing is left

All the groceries are going to be a nightmare and cleaned out in hours. People probably won’t even think about the pet store.

Dog food is high In protein. Shelf stable for 1-2 years. Just need to supplement vitamin C.

Then I think I’m going after salt. Easy way to preserve any meat that I kill without refrigeration. And a good water filter and iodine. I think with those items I would be able to survive for a long time

There is not and will never be an EMP with this type of capability. Anything not running at the time would simply need to restart and be fine for the most part.

To be fair, the OP isn’t describing it correctly. If I remember the book correctly, many things surge out and get fried, but many electronics survive: its a lot to do with the lack of energy to charge things or gas availability for cars etc.

From the wiki article on the author:

“Forstchen has been invited to make presentations regarding the threat of EMP before members of Congress, and at STRATCOM, Sandia Labs, and NASA. ”

That’s a lot of smart and/or influential people asking him to discuss further.

I see people saying get generators and a fuel supply and drive carburetor vehicles. Where are you going to get fuel when the pumps run on electricity?

First thing I would do is blow up the amite river bridges. Keep the Baton Rougeans on their side.

You’d probably be in trouble if he didn’t have Cam Hanes or John Dudley with him lol.

Siphon from the gas tanks of all the cars that can’t run

I wouldn’t go for a generator. I think it’s too much trouble and you won’t have gas for long enough. What is your generator going to do for you? Especially with all your appliances fricked

That Selco dude and link that was posted a couple of times said that 1 can of corned beef could get you a couple of hours with a chick.

Early 20s me would have died of starvation but had a hell of a time getting there.

Per Lloyd's of London, that has been underwriting insurance for centuries, it is inevitable and will cost trillions.
It almost happened in July of 2012. We missed it by nine days.

Hand pumps are a thing. I have one that I use for 55gal drums. Or, you could use one connected to your truck at 12v

The book implied that it was a coordinated EMP attack-- multiple nuclear explosions in the atmosphere intended to blanket the continental US with . It was the Chinese, if I recall.

In the book, pretty much any device that contained integrated circuits was affected, so power grid, all vehicles from the 80s onward, anything with a computer chip, really went kaput. It is amazing how pervasive circuit boards are in modern life. Not sure if that is good science, but I think that is the scenario the OP is discussing

Not to give spoilers, but one big impact that folks don't think about right away is the impact of the lack of refrigeration. Not just food spoilage, but a lot of medicine requires refrigeration. If it runs into months, insulin-dependent diabetics are screwed.

shite broke down quick. Scary crap.

I think I would head to a nearby backpacking supply store, and load up on freeze dried food, and all the isobutane cans I could get.

I'd probably stay away from places like Cabela's, as looting there would be a bloodbath. I'd face hipster backpackers before hunting baws for my supplies.

No need to fix your fences, your horses will be on the barbeque grill by month 2.

Solar storm = to or > Carrington Event. CME passed thru Earth's orbit 9 days ahead of us.

Results = Destruction in the Northern Hemisphere of all high tension power lines and any transformers that the local power companies couldn't get off the grid before 10 billion tons of charged elections hit the Earth. No electricity for 6 mos to 2 years. Worst case up to 90% of the US population could perish from lack of sanitary drinking water, disease, hunger and social upheaval.

From what I have read, when the ions hit the magnetosphere they are directed into the poles. The earth itself becomes charged. The more ions the further south the charge goes. The electrons attract to conductors, whether they are carrying current or not, and the extra weight of the elections literally stretch and break power lines. The extra juice fries transformers, the big-ones are custom made in South Korea and China.
China is a screwed as we are as they rely on high tension lines to move electricity.

12% chance per decade. I only roll the dice 3 or 4 more times. On a cosmic level, maybe the miss counts since it was so close. I don't lose any sleep over it, but my bucket-list has 40 acres and a stocked cabin in the woods to pass down. It's life assurance for your kids.

OK, I know, /pol/ board, but this is the real deal. Instead of throwing away billions on BS and scaring everybody about AHHH Ebola, AHHH Global Warming, spend some money and either fix the grid, or have essential power generation equipment in an inventory. It is a remarkably cheap (relatively speaking) problem to prepare for and nobody seem to worry about it.

If anyone is serious about actually preparing for a event of this type, download a copy of the Church of Latter Days Saints Survival manual, it is the gold standard, a goggle search will get you a free PDF download. Similar information on their website here,
