a growing body of research suggests that women are indeed marrying less-educated men simply because that’s who is available—not necessarily because of changing preferences.
But, they'll always have an eye out for a better deal.

More education doesn't equate to more intelligence.
In some industries, maybe, but that's not true across the board.
Engineering for example is trending towards say structural engineers having a masters, which means you need to graduate undergrad with at least a 3.0+.

What this means is these "highly educated" women probably have degrees in disciplines that don't pay the bills (HR, education, Fine Arts, etc). They hook up with men in a trade - plumbing, HVAC, electrical, etc - who are making bank.

Wives have been marrying “down” since the dawn of man.
It’s called “low-hanging fruit”

Given that the “hypergamy” charge is that women are hardwired to seek the best man they can get, it makes WAY more sense to me to say that the definition of “best” has changed, instead of the writers asserting that thousands of years of instincts have just been overwritten in the last two decades
I've heard Richard Reeves talk about this. "High value" men are becoming those who feature less traditionally masculine traits. Empathy, emotional maturity, and supportive roles are more sought after than finances, physical strength, and influence.
This podcast episode from a few days ago goes further in depth about this topic. However, data generated from popular dating apps belie OP's report. High value women (attractive, making good money, educated, fit) have much higher expectations for men, and it's leading to a trend of young people not finding partners.

My wife is "more educated" than I am. I have a public hugh school diploma from Missouri and not a college credit to my name.
I used to be smart, even though not educated, got a 99 on the asvab when I enlisted in the military but I must confess, several years of THC consumption have killed a few of my brain cells.

And this time? It’s women who are “marrying down.”
They have no choice if they want husbands. Young men have looked at the costs and returns from a college degree and have decided its not worth it.

I paid for her degree, that has to count for something, right?
That angle is actually discussed in the article.

I'm not reading all that new age claptrap.
Marriage has always been a marriage of equals; woman came from man's side so she could walk next to him, not in front or behind him.
Yes, the man is the spiritual leader and protector of the home. If a man can't embrace and welcome this responsibility, I'd strongly recommend that a woman finds a man that will. Likewise, if a woman rejects this, move on; you'll both be better off.

Theres only so many college educated and well-established men.
These men get their choice and a lot of them don't want to choose a similarly educated and established women. They mostly want to find a trophy wife that has the same values.
Women however want their equal, the only problem is their equal doesn't want them. So guess what, women have to compromise for someone less. So sad...

it was fairly common for highly educated men in the United States to marry less-educated women.
Funny, i don't recall there being a term for an educated man marrying an uneducated women. Odd that the opposite deserves it's own term.

You can be educated, and actually any intelligent human, "educated" or not can attest to the fact that education does not equal intelligence.
You can be the most educated kindergarten teacher in the world, that doesn't mean you know shite about physics, biology, engineering, economics, etc...
Education is the last class you have attained towards a major. How does that equate intelligence, lakeboy?

I have a hard science degree and work with a lot of women who do as well. On the whole, our husbands are tradesmen and no one feels like they married beneath them.

There's plenty of colleges educated women; this is 2025.
If a older, successful man wants a trophy wife, they're out there and easy to find.
I saw a lot of old men with much younger wives and inevitably, the woman looked miserable AF.
I couldn't tolerate that.
