I need to get back home tomorrow in BTR. I'm leaving from about 2 hours north of ATL in the early morning. Should I be able to make it home before too much hard wind will interfere with driving, or should I leave now and drive overnight? Looking at a 10 hour drive.

wind won't be your concern at all assuming you're leaving early. The only way you could be in trouble is if we wake up and Nate is a cat 2 or something, which is HIGHLY unlikely.

How long is your trip?

To avoid tropical storm conditions you should plan on being home for 12-2PM.

So it’s at 65mph now and going to traverse halfway through the gulf tomorrow and stay a TS?

I'm questioning that forecast, too. Imho, with her staying offshore of Mexico, she's going to intensify more this evening than expected. That sat view shows her wanting to spin up rather quickly.

Rds or Slackster, how does the forward speed effect the destructive ability of the hurricane as it makes landfall? Is a hurricane with 90 MPH winds moving at 22mph more destructive than a storm with the same wind speed moving at say 12 mph as it hits land? The forward speed has to have some type of effect on damage. Also, does the hurricane push a higher surge moving faster? I know my boat does and it's basically the same effect.

Hulk, bad weather starts around 4pm tomorrow. I would not want to be driving through i10 in MS past like 3 or so.

Great pics while you were boozing it up.

10 hours with 0 stoppage, so realistically about 11 hours with a stop or two.. We may leave tonight and drive 4-5 hours and get a hotel room and finish the drive tomorrow morning.

If that’s true, it’ll be going right over me

What are the chances of this thing developing a decent eye?? I’d love to snap a few pics, never had one pass over me before

Forward speed effects the winds, but it's already calculated in the winds we see. If the storm has 65 mph winds and is moving 20 mph, it would have 55 mph winds if it was moving 10 mph.

The effect it has on surge is a little different. Slower storms tend to build up more surge, but faster storms will carry surge effects further inland, in estuaries and what not, for example. Obviously the speed can't carry water any higher than the water is itself, it's just that the effects can be seen in rivers too, not just the immediate coast.

Good lord!!! Just comparing this storm, in terms of speed, to Harvey. This storm will be in the heart of the gulf Saturday morning and in the northeast two days later

I hate trying to give advice in these situations, so I'd err on the side of caution. If it doesn't put you or your family out, leave whenever you safely can do so.

Well, this is something most didn't know on this board. I was completely unaware the forward movement was calculated into the wind speed. Good stuff man....thanks.
