Just curious, how long have you studied meteorology? What’s your experience with tracking storms? Just curious
I started following heavily in 2004 with Hurricane Ivan. My parents had a house at the time in Destin and we drove down the next day to look at the damage. Always been interested in following it ever since then.

Any chance this weakens to a Cat 2 by landfall?
I am not even a amateur pretend to be weatherman. But I like the way you are thinking

I think they lean too much on extrapolating wind speed from pressure. The pressure went up 7 mb in the last pass. It might have been 944 but it’s filling up and rising fast. Just because it’s at 944 doesn’t mean it’s a Cat 4. Extrapolating winds from pressure drops makes more sense.
That's an interesting/informative note.

Milton is trying to make one last shot of intensifying - look how it is trying to push out the drier air that’s been entrained on the west/southwest side…

Very large convoy of equipment and personnel (Motorola Solutions) headed southbound on I-185 between Lagrange and Columbus GA. Some had both Milton and Helene stickers so guess they are demobing and shifting resources. Sending best wishes and prayers to all those in path.

Having lived in Florida for over 30 years I can’t tell you how much I hate TWC.

I get for messaging keeping the winds a little high but c'mon, its obviously not a high end 4 right now.
The first priority of govt data (not just US govt, every govt past, present and future) is messaging. Accuracy, even when possible, is never the first consideration.

It’s missing the back half of the eye wall as recon confirmed.
Hope that level of degradation is sustained. Posted on 10/9/24 at 1:20 pm to Mr. Misanthrope
The number of tornadic circulations in the spiral bands is impressive.

Tornados are the biggest problem for the next few hours before the strong winds get to land and the surge starts coming in.

the doomcasters at /r/tropicalweather are in shambles that this isn't going to flatten Tampa

But what about low lying areas in St. Pete? Still looks like the bay is going to be 8-10 feet storm surge.
