Sure, but that is not the NHC's fault people didn't take it seriously.
to wit... didn't the NHC do away with the center line for a while after that due to that exact reason?
that center line does lead the general public to assume the NHC's official thought is it will be in the general area of that line... whether they intend to or not
you can scream "cone of uncertainty" all you want... but that little line does scream "official prediction/forecast"

I'll be doing a Periscope from Madeira Beach if we stay.

From what I remember when Katrina was about to hit sout Florida they initially had the hard turn as soon as it got on the gulf side of FLA. The track shifted west each day after that a good bit. It went from hitting Tampa to Destin, mobile, etc all the way to Nola

It's been an absolute joy to zip around I-95 in Miami with only 20% of the normal traffic on the road. Almost makes this hurricane inconvenience worth it.

Serious, and a little "touched", it seems.

movement from last drop is +0.1 N +0.4 W (~1 hr 50 min)
movement since drop 1 of the mission... +0.3 N +1.1 W (~5 hr 10 min)

That shift basically happened over the course of 24 hours that Friday and yeah it was sort of an "oh shite" moment but the real panic didn't set in until it bombed out over the loop current and people woke up to a Category 5 taking aim at New Orleans in like two days.

The center of the track shifted west, but the storm never left the original cone. The cone is there for a reason - it is the possible locations of the center at a given time.
I always enjoy our twice-daily Katrina discussions.

very good point...Katrina's rapid intensification didn't help any

I just realized the difference in time between Irma and Katrina is almost the same amount of time between Katrina and andrew. Forecasting has come a long way

Hurricane Irma wreaks havoc with cruise line passengers and destinations
Passengers boarding the Carnival Cruise ship “Paradise” could not get an answer about whether they were going to Cuba or not until well after they boarded.
“They told us if we didn’t get on board and we didn’t travel that we have lost our money,” said Daniel Walsh.
Carnival closed its south Florida offices, but still expected Justin Perkins of Lakeland and his friends to drive to Miami to catch a cruise there and return to port on Monday.
Just after 3 p.m., passengers aboard the Paradise learned the ship was bound for Cuba.
Carnival has canceled or delayed several cruises.
It announced Thursday afternoon it is issuing credits for future trips to passengers whose cruises are shortened, cancelled or delayed.
I don't think I would be booking with Carnival again. The Carnival Cruise ship has to track through Hurricane Irma to get to Cuba.

Irma not looking nearly as well put together as she has been the past few days.
I've got a feeling we'll see a dip into Category 4 status by the next update in an hour.

Remember back in the day when everyone had a Hurricane tracking chart from WAFB and the coordinates were issued every couple of hours so you could draw your little dot on the grid?
Now we have 3d satellite views and all these other ways of tracking and forecasting these storms. Crazy to think about.

Outer eyewall has won.
If that last microwave pass is any indication, the eye will be huge in the morning.

People are making an exodus from Florida like they're Israelites and Pharaoh is chasing them. Meanwhile the weather channel hurricane expert says the only ones who need to evacuate are the ones in surge zones.
