St. Martin is home to about 80,000 people, many of whom have "underestimated" the storm's power, according to the interior minister.

Hopefully the loss of life will be minimal. That's a sad thing to read.

Providenciales is a flat island. Anguilla and Anegada are as well. Anegada has a high point of 28 feet above sea level. There's no high ground for people to go to there. Providenciales has a high point of 148 feet. Anguilla has a high point of 212 feet.

I really fear that there won't be much left of Anegada if it catches the brunt of the storm. Hopefully, it's just far enough north of the rest of the BVI.

Did't St. Marten actually fit entirely in the eye? If they missed it,

Missed what? What is "it"?

I feel the same way when we are talking about US Citizens who definitely have a way and means to get out somehow; albeit maybe difficult in a lot of situations.

On an Island way out there like that? Different tragic situation.

News coming out of St. Martin is looking grim.

If you've been to St. Maarten you know that many of the people that live there live in glorified shacks.

Regardless of if they underestimated, most of those people don't have the resources to run away to another island for shelter. They're stuck.

ETA: Pity is acceptable in this situation.

That is showing the spread in center locations at 102h. Notice how clustered Jose is, that is probably more typically for this short of a forecast.

I have been there, my favorite island and nicest locals. Sadly many of them live completely unaware of incoming weather.

The poster Weewee (or something like that) lives on St. Maarten. Hopefully he's ok and can post a report at some time.

So in short, the computers don't know any more than what we do 4 days from now.

Dumb...many of these poor folks live in very basic conditions with very little resources.
