Last I saw it was 185 MPH. But with continued pressure dropping 200 seems possible, even probable. I am amazed at the models that picked up the extreme deepening and commensurate increase in wind speed.

So this might be the most impressive microwave image if an eye you'll ever see. Dear Lord.

NHC discussion mentioned the possibility of an eyewall replacement about to get started. They might just miss the peak of this cycle.

I can't for the life of me understand how an airplane can fly through 200mph+ crosswinds. It seems like it would flip the plane on its side.
How Do Planes Fly Into Hurricanes?

There isn't enough Xanax and red wine on the planet.

It's perfect. Never seen anything like it. Hope I never do again.

Umm, pretty sure they fly over it and then into the eye which is relatively calm.

It's going to be a monster. Hopefully it hits less populated areas. It seems unlikely that it would hook away from the GoM.
With those winds, even areas well inland will see catastrophic damage.

That prison may be built to withstand some cat 5 winds but not cat 5 storm surge. Whoever decided to build a prison there was a moron, and whoever decided not to evacuate the prisoners is a moron. Now would be the time to do it long before shite gets real and personnel would be needed elsewhere.
If I was employed at that prison and they told me I had to stay...today would be my last day working there

Irma still tracking due west and gaining speed. Only 130 miles from the islands. She better turn NW soon or its gonna be a much more southern track than anticipated

Flight level winds are up to 180 mph on recent flights, so they do fly through it.

No escaping death row.

it might be my dumb arse pea brain, but is it tracking further south than originally anticipated?

So Cuba appears to be in the cross hairs directly? That would be slightly farther south than originally estimated.
That could weaken it before it gets into the gulf.
