AF uses C130's. NOAA uses Orions. I've asked, but never found an answer as to the difference between what the AF does and what NOAA does. What's amazing is they've never lost a plane in one of these weather missions, not even when they were using piston driven aircraft shortly after WWII.

I get that moving that many prisoners is a big deal, especially when you can't be 100% sure where to take them right now, but that seems like a huge risk.

What a view. If you are going to be locked up, this is where you want to be.
1 hour outside includes snorkeling and beach volleyball

Can't even comprehend the power of a storm like this.

Those poor islands.

Some ppl out there don't seem to get the gravity of how catastrophic a storm like this could/will be. It's all fun and games with storm chasers and such, and then a Cat 5 strikes, and suddenly nobody's joking anymore. This is the real deal.

So they say it is Cat 5 proof....So has it been tested in a real Cat 5 with no people? If not I'm hoping (if Irma hits that area...hopefully it doesn't hit anywhere) that they get everyone out of there to let this be the test....I'm hoping they don't do a manned run as the first test....that would be dumb.

That prison may be built to withstand some cat 5 winds but not cat 5 storm surge. Whoever decided to build a prison there was a moron, and whoever decided not to evacuate the prisoners is a moron. Now would be the time to do it long before shite gets real and personnel would be needed elsewhere.

I can't for the life of me understand how an airplane can fly through 200mph+ crosswinds. It seems like it would flip the plane on its side.

How far out from the eye do the most extreme winds reach?

LSUMAN why does the track only say west when it seems to have gained some latitude since the 2pm NHC positing? appears to have moved .2 north .7 West.

Unless that thing is watertight it wont withstand a storm surge. RIP drowned prisoners.

I don't think we'll see that kind of streaming in the direct path of this one. At least not near the eye wall.

It's so strong it's gonna wobble, it could wobble south, north but the general motion will still be west.

That jail doesn't hold a candle to the one in Plaquemines Parish down in Pointe a la hache, it raised probably 30 to 40 feet.
