Andrew apparently was 165 sustained when it his homestead. It took houses off of foundations and blew them away. I am up in Central Fl. and will fare better than them.

The boat and chainsaw are gassed up, ropes in the truck, going to get potable water, and have food. I really wish this bitch would go northeast and, while I feel I am ready to rock, I know reality says nobody is ready for this.

Hurricane Hunters have now found winds of 185mph (160kts).

***EDIT: I think these were flight level winds, not surface winds

I'm going to make a prediction that this thread out performs the Hurricane in Texas thread whose name escapes me right now.

I live in PR and have been calling and texting my diesel guy since Friday. He finally responded today that he will "try " to get here before the storm

The electrical infrastructure is so bad here the power goes out sometimes when its windy. They are predicting 3-4 months to get all the power back on after the storm. Allegedly, it was 5-6 months after Georges.

I remember driving down to the Keys a year after Andrew and there were still huge debris piles everywhere that hadn't been moved. It was like a nuclear bomb went off. Scary shite.

I'm amazed at these numbers. The pressure isn't THAT low to generally suggest 185 mph winds.

We need to pay attention to make sure Irma makes the turn well before 90 degrees west longitude. RIGHT NOW, it appears the turn will come around 85 degrees west taking Irma just off the west coast of Florida.

If it turns North at 90W long, that's right up Nola's arse. Even if it turns at 85W long, that's going to be terrible for gulf coast La, and catastrophic for Mobile towards Florida pan handle.

I believe I was wrong about it being surface winds, I think those are flight level winds.

I'm from Homestead and Andrew destroyed everything. Grandfather who raised us lost home and his business. I was only a baby and we evacuated. He still has the pictures he took when we got back home and they still haunt the old man.

His comments in the post to which I replied are 100% fear mongering:

quote:

My concern is she continues to march westward at a constant speed. Large hurricanes have difficulty turning with such fast forward motion. Unless she begins to slow down, which is likely, the models trending farther to the west will continue. Several now bring Irma as far west as Mobile. IF that were to happen, all the anxiety over Florida would be for nothing as the main impacts would not affect most of the state. I’m sure many New Orleanians remember Katrina’s track. She was supposed to make the turn and hit Apalachicola, however, she kept going farther to the west so when she did make the turn, it was too late for NOLA.

^ All fear mongering.
