e slower storm putting wind across the water for a longer period of time provides more overall force to build up greater momentum in the coming surge? I'm guessing that's the idea here.

Yep. The powers that be in the NFL have reached out to the super dome to discuss playing the game there
all I can remember is the Saints 1st game in BR after Katrina was Nick Saban and the Dolphins

Tampa may be fricked.

I thank that's vaguely correct. I'm not a hundred percent on that though that may be more of an rds/bay answer.

I didn't think sub 900 was possible still don't believe it will but who knows at this point.
Sub 900 is certainly possible, but those big dips down to like 880 as the GFS has been throwing out would basically require a little upper level help to enhance the ventilation. We'll see if it materializes.

We just got back from honeymoon in Antigua, thankfully we left on Monday while weather as still good. The resort we stayed at (was on west coast of island thankfully) was not very hurricane safe (small cabanas made of wood and tin roofs) and they have evacuated everyone that is staying to a more safe and secure resort. I am hoping that some people will be able to leave today cause Irma is going to be hell for the island.
Talking with the locals they didn't seem to worried about the storm but that wasn't when it was a Cat 5 like it is now. Driving through the island I could only imagine what Irma is going to do. One good thing about Antigua is the island has some good size mountains/foothills to protect it from the wind.

What would y'all say the odds are of this thing making landfall anywheres between Galveston and, say Pensacola?

So I've been lurking this thread since the beginning, but have a question. Currently, we're vacationing in Grand Cayman. From what I've seen, looks like maybe some rain Saturday/Sunday morning. We don't fly out until Monday the 11th. Should we be concerned that it actually might hit here?

The odds are slim but there's always a chance.

SIAP, been away for a while.
I've seen reports of gusts in Irma of up to 215mph.

Grand Cayman will be fine.

Only problem is the winds will likely be even stronger at elevation. Several islands in the Caribbean are going to get a huge hit from this.
