The manager of their townhome community told them "it hasn't flooded there before". Based on the elevation maps they're around 7-10ft above sea level.
They’ve never gotten a Cat 4 before either.
A 20ft surge would put a 7ft elevation under a good bit of water unless they are prettu far inland
Send them this map link and if they’re in the surge areas, they should leave. I would assume a Cat 5 level surge because if this storm reaches that strength it will bring that level of surge even if it weakens before landfall

got any suggestions?
First link should say NHC, not NHS. But that's just being a dick for the sake of being a dick

ummm isn't the expected storm surge in Wilmington going to be 15-24 ft?? Not also considering tide and wave action.
That city is in the red for evac...those folks are nuts.
Unless things change dramatically, no one should remain in Wilmington. It's that simple.

i am probably out late tomorrow night to New Orleans. Was going there next week anyway. Can’t take risks with a 3 month old.
Safe travels.

Sooooo, Bald Head Island might not exist after this, at least as we know it. Is that a real possibility? Because it seems like a real possibility.

I’m sorry. I know you are tying to convince them and that’s hard on you too. They seriously may not make it through this if they stay. Please tell me they don’t have kids.

Send them clips from that movie the Perfect Storm

Considering Wilmington will likely get the NE quadrant of this storm he should send his friends pictures of Bay St. Louis post Katrina because that’s what that town will look like

They don't. I'm pretty confident my wife and I can convince them in the next 24 hours.

At least get them just a little inland. Somewhere like Greenville or Florence.

Wow. Have a friend with family on the Outerbanks. From what I am told her uncle copyrighted the 'OBX' acronym or something.
Apparently her parents are deciding to ride it out. Having a hurricane party end of the week.
Dumbasses.

I have the sneaking suspicion our new neighbors don’t fully understand how this works. I’ve got more than 1 sideways look when getting the hurricane kit ready
Are they not from the area?
People on the East Coast know just as much if not more than people in La what the effects of a major hurricane can be.

They do. He works at a hospital so he's likely to be called in for mandatory staffing. And even if he isn't they've heard "they won't be able to get back in" next Tuesday when he's back on shift.
I've already told them that the authorities blocking access back into town will let medical personnel through.
I'm going to go through the shite we dealt with in the 10-14 days after Katrina and see if that changes their mind
This one is a beast. I hope you can convince them to move inland.

They won’t have to worry. The marines at camp lejune will come rescue them.
My son is there and they are not allowed to leave. Frick their personal belongings cars/trucks etc. they are 7 miles inland but right on the river.
To be fair the coast guard was in New Orleans the next day too. Thousand people plus cant make that mistake again.

Not really.
There hasn't been a major direct hit from a hurricane on the east coast since 1989.

Is it a pride thing? I can’t imagine why people would do that

They'll want to keep a flashlight or two, an axe, and rope in the attic. Id also suggest taking a look now at the chopping angle. It can be tough to get enough force in tight spots to cut through, so they should have an idea where they'll have the best angle to cut through or just have a chainsaw or something.
The rope obviously to tie themselves off as to not get swept away when on top of the roof. They need to legitimately plan for a roof escape.
