People on the East Coast know just as much if not more than people in La what the effects of a major hurricane can be.
Ehh that varies dramatically by area. SeLa takes special pride in their ability to handle hurricanes.

It’s not like there is anything they can do to save their property. Only put yourself and other people’s lives at risk.

major direct hit from a hurricane on the east coast since 1989.
Major or not, people on the East Coast know the drill. They aren’t rookies.

Thats also ignoring the 24+ hrs of hurricane winds and a possible landfalling hurricane with 140+ mph winds.
Some people are just insane.
And if your home starts to be inundated from the surge what do you do? Go upstairs where the roof will fly off in 140 mph winds? Go outside and die?

Welp. Just finished moving the last box of my belongings into my new place in Charleston, and now I get to evacuate.

Cape Fear to Cape Lookout will not exist as it is now in our lifetimes.
Will those barrier islands help at all with a storm this powerful?

Wilmington is full of transplants.
The exact quote today from our friends: "most people are staying, they don't seem worried."

They'll want to keep a flashlight or two, an axe, and rope in the attic. Id also suggest taking a look now at the chopping angle. It can be tough to get enough force in tight spots to cut through, so they should have an idea where they'll have the best angle to cut through or just have a chainsaw or something. The rope obviously to tie themselves off as to not get swept away when on top of the roof. They need to legitimately plan for a roof escape.

Went fishing many times out of Oregon Inlet. Charter boats take a strange route to the open water.
Changes all the time.
Every house there is on 12'-15' stilts. There is not a tree higher than 10' on the whole island.
I always wanted to meet the crew that pulled in this beast.

They need to forget all that and drive inland by tomorrow.

We are on the eastern shore of Va in Cape Charles and have a mandatory evacuation for everyone up to two blocks from our house. We are on the bay side of the Chesapeake Bay. We already have tides 2 1/2 feet above normal due to massive rainfall. I think we are going to stay as we have a boat to deal with. The good news is it's in a pretty well protected marina and has floating docks. The really good news is I am going fishing tomorrow down by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel...

Gotcha.
That was my question. Maybe they should start talking to some old timers and locals

No idea. Never met the family, just sent a text to see what was up and if any help was needed.
They live in the city of Kitty Hawk apparently. Been there forever. Hippie type I think.

They will also want a source of protection from the other wildlife swept on their roof from the storm.

I hope you don’t have a wife and kids you’re foolishly putting in harm’s way. It’s time to get your shite and leave. Insured or not insured boat be damned.
