Huntsville, AL getting the Space Force Command HQPosted by Ross

The Air Force has recommended the Army’s Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala., as its preferred location for the headquarters of its new Space Command, at least four sources tell AL.com. An announcement has been scheduled at 2 p.m., sources said. Winning the base would mean at least 1,600 new jobs for the area and more as the command and its missions grow.
None of this will happen soon, however, because the headquarters is set to stay at its current location in Colorado Springs for at least six years. The Air Force studied sites in numerous states including Alabama and Colorado, and sources say one of those states – Florida – was Alabama’s main competition at the end. The criteria to host the headquarters included proximity to military bases with space assets, high security and communications capabilities. Redstone meets all those criteria. It is host to the Army Space and Missile Command, Army Aviation and Missile Command, the Defense Intelligence Agency/Missile and Space Intelligence Center and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, among others.
The FBI chose Redstone for a “strategic realignment” of major assets including its cybersecurity operations. FBI announcements about that realignment said Huntsville is “the Silicon Valley of the South.” The Huntsville area also meets all of the Air Force’s “liveability score” goals, workforce qualifications, infrastructure, community support and setup costs.

Huntsville is poppin. If I were to live in Alabama this is probably my landing spot. That’s still a stretch though.

I would probably consider Raleigh-Durham or maybe DFW as the Silicon Valley of the south before Huntsville.
RDU maybe. But thats changing more and more as Huntsville keeps growing as a tech hub.
Dallas? Not really. What makes Silicon Valley is the high concentration of tech there. It's the defining industry. DFW may have a good size tech industry, it doesn't define the city like it does Huntsville (or RDU).

I'll have to keep tabs on it then. Don't get me wrong, if I have an opportunity to move to an area with a good size tech industry, Huntsville would be one of those places. It's a nice city and you have to love the mascot for the local minor league baseball team: the Trash Pandas.
Can't argue with that. It seems pockets of the metro area have a tech presence but you'd really never know it unless you looked into it.

Guess we will see. I’m not sure.
Sequestration will hurt, but the area at least is trying to privatize more with the Toyota-Mazda plant and Blue Origin but we do need to court more private industry
Really wish we could do the hard court press onto Elon and get SpaceX

I think the Biden Administration is planning to keep it. Plus, Congress will have to be the ones to eliminate it.
