I’m more referring to the nature of life in our two respective countries. Freedom, the primacy of The Rule of Law, the public virtues, equality under the law- that sort of stuff. The Vietnamese people continue to suffer under State oppression even as progress is made. We are far more virtuous in that respect, that’s my point. People get arbitrarily crushed in Vietnam every day because a random Party official says so and nobody says a word or ever knows.

Well, this is true, but that was also true of Nazi Germany. The United States, even at its worst, is way, way better than Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia or China under Mao. It's not even subject to debate.
Now, perfect? Our record with black folks and natives is nothing to brag about. But, we always seem to be working on getting better and caring when we frick it up. But, by and large we've exerted military force abroad for the betterment of other nations even though we sometimes run into the old adage, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

Nobody is saying it is a subject of debate and it's absurd you'd feel the need to even go there.

He’s reacting to you because he thinks yo are going a bridge too far. You want to face a painful past honestly ? I commend you. You want to twist and contort that painful past ( I’m not saying you did that ) into a moral relativism that says we are equally complicit to the monstrous regimes in Nazi Germany, China, Cuba, Cambodia, Soviet Union? That’s a bridge too far.

Thompson died in Pineville and is buried in Lafayette

I'm interested to know what your solution would have been. I mean clearly any reasonable person can tell that we had an issue with the USSR, China, and North Korea in that part of the World at that time.

What sucks is that Thompson made a few radio calls to the ground troops first, who weren't reporting any friendly casualties, asking what was going on and specifically, "What's all the shooting about?" and he got stonewalled. There was a Command and Control chopper overhead that (I think) a bird colonel brigade commander was in. They had to know something was up, too.
After Thompson landed, a couple of soldiers basically told him to frick off. He flew back to base camp to refuel and drop off a wounded kid. He went into the TOC to tell them what was happening and, again, was basically told to frick off.
Calley was a 90 day wonder 2LT platoon commander. Medina was a CPT company commander. They were the only officers that went to trial and may have been the only officers charged. There should have been officers up the chain of command charged for this. About 20 enlisted men were also charged, but Calley was the only one convicted. He got sentenced to life, but was kept under house arrest at Ft Benning while his appeal went through. He ended up getting a greatly reduced sentence and then got pardoned by Tricky Dick.
The whole situation was a fricking travesty.

But the "baby kiler" stigma stuck to all US soldiers, because of the hysteria this was spun into. It was the anti-American PR campaign the leftist media had been waiting for.
We should have executed the perpetrators in the field, on TV if it gets their little peckers hard, not sent this fricking guy on a whistle-stop tour of anti-US dogma that was attached and spread over the entire armed forces.
