The timing of ground sloth extinction coincides with the arrival of humans in the Americas, with butchering marks found on sloth bones providing direct evidence of hunting. Their slow, large bodies were easy targets for prehistoric hunters.

Large parts of Brazil was under water millions of years ago....IMO, that is the answer where they came from.

These materials are hard for machines to excavate, and harder for humans with simple tools.

Sandstone should be easy to excavate, but volcanic rock?

Giant sloths did this with their claws, but humans using machinery or hand tools would have a difficult time doing it?

Maybe that’s why the sloths went extinct, they all died of exhaustion and/or bleeding to death from ripped off claws.

Wonder if they’ve found fossilized sloth skeletons in these tunnels? Seems like at least a few would’ve died in there.

These stories always strike me as the geologists trying to hype something up when there is a boring explanation.
like the structures found under the pyramids that were not man made. Never heard more about that

Water did that.

This is the most likely explanation if it wasn't humans.

Little known fact These guys killed a sloth and mixed it rendered fat with some ground up wheat and made the first roux on the planet. It's the OG, "gotta start with a roux " meme.

It's common knowledge that there sloth and pterodactyl gumbo was best in the region.

So, ginormous sloths are a good theory but humans aren't?

Can't you just see two cavemen:
Og: "Hey Grok, let's screw with our future descendants. Remember those ginormous sloth claws we've been saving...".

I hope they put a cork in that thing so whatever’s down there doesn’t find us.

If they reach the surface it’ll be time to get the guns out.

The leading idea is that giant, extinct ground sloths dug these colossal shelters, turning parts of South America into a maze of underground homes.

Wasn’t that a Star Trek episode?
