How would you react if your son told you he wanted to be a priest?

Serious question.
I'm mostly asking Catholics, I suppose, but I would be interested in how the irreligious would deal with it.

The descision to become a priest is an honorable one. I would tell him I understand, but want him to do his due diligence on the situation and understand the depth of this decision. Many men make snap decisions to become a priest, and live to regret it, because they spend the prime of their lives huddled away. He can still go to college and then entered the siminary. Then, he can get a Master's in theology which makes him eligible to be a bishop later.
ETA: I am a Catholic FWIW
If he does his homework on becoming a priest and still honestly believes that God is calling him, then I would be happy for him.

Great question. I would try to steer him in another direction but would ultimately support I guess.
Have any of you known anyone to want to be a priest then decide it wasn't for them due to the lifestyles of those involved with the priesthood? The only two people I know who wanted to be priests changed their minds when they encountered a lot of homosexual activity.
I don't care to argue this and I'm not trying to make anything out of this just what I was told.

My advice would be that he should wait until he's in his mid to late 20s to enter the seminary. That way he has some experience in the secular world. You can be a good priest without taking that route but the experience will help you relate better to your flock.

I thought this recently. Is the priesthood for young men. For people who haven't lived and lost and had years of temptation? A lot of the historical figures I've read about who joined the church did so later in life. I don't know. I'm not catholic but that's my thought.

I had a friend whose brother was going to be a priest and left because it wasn't for him. He is now married to a guy .

Be the best damn priest he can be, which would be my response to pretty much anything my son would want to be.
