One of the top 3 most amazing things I've ever seen was an F-14 launching off of the USS America at night.

Im in the "we shoulda kept it" camp.
It does quite a few things better than the F18 when it comes to naval ops. Primarily, its just bigger. Its just like having a bigger boat, always a good thing once you have it going.
Flight hours were expensive with it but that was being rapidly improved. The hornet is too much of a "lets make one plane for everything" idea. The Tomcat is a pure bred Naval fleet defense interceptor.
Everybodys too hung up on this modularity multi purpose shite.

I haven't watched the video. Did they mention anything about swaptronics, drop checks(simulated cat shot), and phantom gripes? "Radar does not work in O-F-F position."

Just watching it for the first time. They're talking about how the engines work and how they slow down the air entering the engines to kept it below the speed of sound. That's as far as I've made it so far. I'm guessing none of those things will be mentioned.

I was in the Navy when the first squadrons deployed with their multicolored paint schemes. God, those were some awesome looking aircraft.

Was "lucky" enough to still be in VA when the last of these flew home and the first of the 22s were taking off

Did yall know that the Navy and the engineers and designers of the F22 tried to build a naval version of the F22 with variable-swept wings in the 80s? It was called the NAFT-22 (Naval Advanced Tactical Fighter). It was killed, among a few other reasons, because the moving wings hurt the stealth too much.
It is claimed there were some concepts mocked up and I would love to see that. The F22 always reminds me of the Ferarri of the fighters and with those sexy swept wings of the F14 added on to it would have been so awesome.
