Speaking of the speed of sound, I was once hit by the sonic boom from an F-14 Tomcat breaking the sound barrier during an airshow at sea. Low and fast, hangar deck level, we're out on the smoking sponson, probably a couple dozen people out there. Barely heard it coming, it popped the sound barrier right as it passed the smoke pit. The wave hit us with the boom, loud as hell, blasting shirts open, taking hats off, pushed everybody back, the full effect. Pretty good adrenaline rush.
