I use old school shears, don't want electric near the shrubbery. Most of the work is done in the Spring while doing some spring cleaning all over. Summer you want to be outdoors more so more clipping requires. When football starts you get lazy and by winter you just don't to keep things up.
Trimming is important but if you don't control the bugs and fungus, you will lose the war.

I just have a one story house so no stairs. Not sure why anyone would have a bush at the bottom of their stairs, though. I thought indoor plants were a thing of the past.

I hit that area with Nair once a month, usually not long after getting a haircut. The cream works great and it's easy. Just don't leave it on too long or it'll do a number on your sack.
