After kids for us it’s more about a nice meal or a night out etc.

I've been married for 14 years. Me and my wife rarely spend over $150 on each other for Christmas. If I want something during the year I'll buy it. No way I'd want her to spend several k on something that she thinks I'll like

It's never been something I've consciously calculated until I heard what some people I know spend. I know about what I'd normally spend, and it's nowhere near 1%, much less 5%.

A lot, but I'm buying a Christmas from 6 kids to mom, and then something in the $100 range from me on most Christmas's.

No, I've never thought about it in these terms before. This is a purely quantitative way to measure what I imagine for most is more of a mixed qualitative/quantitative decision.
I'm not saying anyone goes out shopping expecting to spend 0.00024853% of their gross household income on Christmas gifts.
However, if you do run the numbers, and those numbers are something like 1-5%, I think there's a good chance you've fallen victim to consumerism gone wild and/or don't care about retirement. That's all.

When I was married, I generally spent somewhere around $400 to $600 on her for Christmas. Now that I am divorced I spend $0 on her.
