Yeah, $20 is over the top and you're setting a bad precedent.
When my kid was just getting out of first grade my now ex mother-in-law was getting ready to slip him a $100 bill for doing so and I cut her off. This was in 1984 and I wasn't going down that worm hole.

We don't do the tooth fairy deal. I don't think kids should become comfortable with the idea that some weird person in a tutu and a magic wand can just waltz into their rooms in the middle of the night and go rummaging around in their beds for spare body parts.

I used to get the stink eye from other parents at the bus stop for giving my kids gifts like DVD's or $20 gift cards to Toys R Us.

First tooth she got $20 because that was all I had and she pulled it herself. After that I went and got some gold dollars and gave her one of those.

We do $2 bills too. Easy to get from bank and very special to them.
