What’s crazy is I find nowadays I have to make restaurant reservations longer in advance than ever before.

I've noticed that as well.

Ruth's Chris in BR, far from cheap, requires a 2-week lead time for a Friday/Saturday night at a prime time.

People are going out despite the prices.

I’m pretty involved in tourism and we are seeing people increasingly gravitating to more upscale options as a first choice more than in the past. Same with flying, seats in the front of the plane (sure there’s a lot less of those seats) sell out before the rest of the plane. If we are flying on shorter notice we have to search more times and routes for better seats than what it used to be like.

We cook quite a bit at home, but also eat out at nicer restaurants 1-2 times a week. Adds up. Likely $1200/month at restaurants. We booze it pretty good as well.

I buy the groceries.

I cook a ton, and we eat like kings. Rarely eat out. I do buy a 1/4 cow every year and we garden.

Roughly 1k a month with wife and two hungry boys

Personally we’ve tried to cut out our “cheap” eating out. Eating out for us now is a “frick the budget” ordeal. As in we’re here to have fun, it’s not just a meal it’s a date night and I don’t care what the price is if I couldn’t afford I wouldn’t have come type of thing. We used to order cheap takeout just because we didn’t feel like cooking. We’ve pretty much totally cut that out.

The wife and I have a very strict $1k a month food budget for groceries .... Costco, Fresh Market, Publix, Lowes, local fresh produce, beef and fish markets included.

That's not counting eating-out.

Inflation is a bitch these days.

$70/week

But I rarely eat out and am only feeding myself/cook two big dishes that last 3 days

Used to go out multiple times a week but you're looking at $25+ at casual dining for a forgettable meal that might yield a single leftover

I had to think about it.

2 people

Groceries probably $150 a week = $600

Lunch at work 2 people x 20 days x $15 average = $800

Dinners out 8 times a month x $75 average = $600

So about $2k a month on the way upper end because we eat mainly chicken breasts, rice, veggies and fruit at home, often take lunch to work and 2 dinners out a week is rare. I'd say the average month is more like $1200.

My wife and I probably spend 2 or 3 hundred. We don't go out to eat often. If I added in what I spent getting deer meat and fishing it'd probably double.
