I think it depends on what you buy. We have a family of four and spend probably $3k plus. We buy only organic fruits and vegetables so that makes a difference. We don’t buy what most would call easy meals. It’s fresh ingredients and meats etc. That number also includes dish and laundry detergents and paper towels and toilet paper etc. All I know is I’m spending at least 30% more than I was 3 years ago. Maybe more.

Was not exactly all that cheap before Biden either. But it has gotten more ridiculous over the last 2.5 years. Eating more healthy is expensive though.

Anything labeled "Keto" is guaranteed to be double the price. Keeping produce in the fridge and unspoiled is a challenge in itself but like keeping bell peppers, cucumbers, onions and romaine on hand at all times.

no it isnt....eating healthy while having variety and extravagant meals is expensive. eating healthy is cheap.
1 lbs of chicken breast is under $3. ground beef 88/12~$4....lean pork is cheap.
so is white rice, beans, canned or frozen green veggies. granted eggs and steak are more expensive but still cheap compared to going out.

$60-100 ish a week, so $240-400 a month.
But I’m single and only eating two meals a day. Haven’t eaten out during the week in a while. Normally make some meal prep for $60 per week. Only time I’ll go over $60 for the week is if my buddies want to go eat over the weekend.

Family of 4, 2 late 50s, one 84 and one 14. About $800-$1000 a month. Mostly eating out. That includes staple items like laundry detergent and toilet paper. Remove those costs and its probably 10-20% less.
Includes alcohol. Not a lot but a 12 pack or so a month, maybe 4 bottles of cheap wine and maybe $100 bottle of brown water.
What amazes me is that every grocery store I go in is packed and every restaurant is packed during normal meal times. It would seem that one or the other would not be packed full of people hunting and providing....but they are.

It seems to me that at least once a month we have an event which requires a couple of hundred bucks for one meal, either at a restaurant or from the grocery store. We spend about $500 on a three day, 2 night camping trip.

I must be on the privileged list, because I have no fricking clue.
That ain't privilege, thats simply being out of touch with current affairs and poor money management. It would not be possible to reconcile an account of any sort without having some idea of where the money went unless you are just a poor manager of your life's business. I'd would hazard to say Elon Musk has a lot of money, someone in his pay has an idea of how much he is spending on food. He may not have a clue but someone on the payroll does. Having a rough idea of what something costs is not the same thing as having an exact number...if one reconciles a bank or credit card statement they will, unless they are dumber than a sack of hammers, have a rough idea of where their money is going. If they ain't reconciling statements the sack of hammers is far smarter...

Is it bad that I have no idea? I’m 50, if I had to worry about food costs I’d die from shame.
It is bad and probably not likely unless you never look at a bank or credit card statement...if that is the case at best you not a good money manager. Having a rough idea of what one spends on life is not akin to worrying about costs...it is simply sound monetary policy. You can rest assured that the richest person on the planet has someone on the payroll who knows almost to a penny what the richest person in the world spends on food. It is simply sound money management to know what things cost. Has nothing to do with worrying about costs or income.

i recently looked at our 2023 credit card spending and it came out to about $16k between groceries, wal mart, and eating out. that's crazy because it sure doesn't feel like that much! you really can't go to a grocery store without spending $100.
