It is now "acceptable" for couples to just straight up ask for cash in lieu of gifts. I recently received a wedding invite from the daughter of a well to do business associate that had a Venmo link.* I was so taken aback I just tossed it in the trash. People need to get it together.

ETA. This chick is in her late 20's and already has her own house and stuff. Her and her hubby want to build an entirely new house (custom) so they are trying to put together a bunch of cash. The Groom has a good job as well. These people were raised right and have money. No clue why they thought it was OK to try and fleece their wedding guests.

No. I just expected better manners from someone who isn't broke. I would be more forgiving of two broke kids trying to start a life and make a down payment on a starter home. Not two adults wanting to build a $700,000 custom home in a gated community and hitting me up for cash.

I’d probably go $150 per head on that.

LOL. But it would be better if you got a link to a registry so you could buy them housewares and other junk? That has been custom for generations now. While I wouldn’t straight up ask for cash, I wouldn’t have a problem with others doing it. Saves me the hassle of searching their stupid registry.

People give money for weddings now? If I gotta travel, pay for a hotel, and sit through the ceremony, you’re getting a small gift off your registry. Why do people expect to get paid for getting married?

It's about the couple celebrating their marriage. I'm not sure why you care if you're giving cash or some shitty towel set. You still have to pay for the gift, right?

If you're offended, don't go to the wedding (which it sounds like you aren't since you threw away the invitation). I'm sure the couple will be glad to save money on your reception meal and drinks than getting some housewares that they don't need.

It is in the northeast.

When my wife (no pics) and I got married in NJ I told her to not expect and checks or cash from the new Orleans folks coming up.
They would get presents based on what we registered for.
Up this way the guests do that and then give you money at the reception on top of that.

$50 in scratch offs. Could be a big winner in there...

I find out what's being served and if it's an open bar. I buy a gift equal to the amount I'm going to eat and drink.

It's a wash in the end.

But I'm trashy.
