How many of you have aphantasia, sometimes called "mind blindness"?

Aphantasia is when your brain doesn't form or use mental images as part of your thinking or imagination. Experts don't define aphantasia as a medical condition, disorder or disability. Instead, it's a characteristic, much like which hand you naturally use to write.

If I asked you to close your eyes and picture of a red star, what do you see? Do you see the red star in your mind? I can not. The best way I can describe it is that I see the idea of a red star, but all I see is black.

With eyes closed, if you do see a red star it's in your mind anyway. There's no actual red star there.

So just like every other person that closes their eyes and does the same exact thing?

Wait. Do people actually visualize images in their mind? If so, I have no idea what’s that like.

If you can't picture things are you able to read fictional books?

I cannot see a red star; I only see a nude woman. Am I going to die?

I absolutely see nothing. I was blown away when I was told a few years ago. Do some of you really see pictures and not black screen?
I read fiction but it does not create pictures in my mind.

*my husband claims he sees pictures

Not being able to imagine, dream, or have an inner monologue is associated with being an NPC or possibly even lacking the touch of Divinity.

Do you want it in 3D and dynamic or just a flat 2D static picture?

When I took tests, I always pictured in my mind the actual text from the textbook with the answer on it.

Wait, you think people close their eyes and can see whatever they want clear as day?

My girlfriend has it. She’s 30, didn’t even know she had it for most of her life, then about 2 years ago she said to a friend “man wouldn’t it be great if you could visualize things in your head?” Friend was like, “uhh, you can’t?”

She’s super smart, but sucks at Pictionary. I’m not kidding, she really sucks at it. She also has trouble going to the store and finding color matches to things around her house. She can cognitively say “this matches” or whatever, but she’s pretty handicapped without one of those augmented reality decoration apps.

She’s got like 400 books, though, she loves reading more than movies, and that part I do not understand.
