I absolutely create diagonal lawn stripes and gas isn't an issue for me because battery.

Changing up the direction of cut is beneficial to the lawn and soil.

Got turf installed, no cutting required.

If you want to display stuff in grass, one of the easier ways is to drop rye grass seeds in a pattern.
Kids at my school used it to spell out stuff against our main rival school for spirit week
SMU marching band did that on the TCU field back in 2000. At the end of their halftime performance, at the end of their song & with the band in their "Diamond M" formation, each bank member reached into their pockets, pulled out some rye seed, and dropped it on the ground"

Or "paint" it with high nitrogen fertilizer. In a week or so depending on weather that grass will be much darker green and growing much faster.

Used to try to keep at least neat looking straight lines. Some parts of the property line are at an angle, so getting it to square up took some extra effort. Now I don't give a shite and just cut it however it flows. This time of year, the lines only last 1-2 days anyways, what's the point?

The guys I know who do it are pretty bored on their weekends. It's impressive but I don't have time for that.

More time away from the wife and kids.
I used to, but IJDGAF about that anymore. I got a 3 year old and a 7 year old I’d rather be spending time with.

Why take the extra time and gas to do something so worthless?
Cutting a square actually saves time. Never a pass without progress with this method. Tf you been doing?

I'm a diagonal kind of guy. If you mow the same pattern constantly, you'll rut up and it'll bite you later on
100% true. I have a few places I have no choice but to run the same pattern bc of a tree close to a bed and it has compacted over the years.

If transitioning from green to brown during this heat wave counts, then I do.
