There are parts of Birmingham that are indeed nice, but I'll pass on the inner city itself. Some of the outlying suburbs are great and seem like a place a person could live and raise a family. I'll stick to Huntsville.

I work in the area every now and then. Some really nice areas. I enjoy it when I’m sent there.

This is the go-to line for someone who lives in a rundown shite-hole part of a city that just happens to have a couple of buildings or homes on some busybody's local historic landmark list. When one of the top 3 comments by visitors about your city is "smells like urine", you don't have charm or character - you're a shite-hole (looking at you, NO).

The old Hoover, yes. But the leadership the past few years has put a plan in place to develop small neighborhood core commercial areas. The Preserve, Ross Bridge and the new development around Trace Crossings is a prime example. The area around the Gallaria has a plan to be the city core. Lots of potential growth in Hoover. It is one of the reasons property value has exploded the past 5 years.

Birmingham is beneath us Huntsvillians. We refrain from going there, if possible.

I think one of the biggest problems with Hoover is they've annexed so much land into the city and it's so spread out. I mean, Greystone is Hoover city, then it goes all the way down 459 to the Morgan Rd exit. And just along 280 between 459 and Greystone are parcels here and there that are considered Hoover. Then you have the Shades Crest area. It's just a hodge podge of areas with no real central hub.
That's cool if they're looking to do what you say, but the problem of being so spread out and segregated is still going to be there.
