I spent a lot of time there competing in track meets at the crossplex. It’s definitely a vastly underrated city, imo, but it does have its shithole aspects as well. For, example there were times we’d go out for a run the day before our races or warmup runs the day of in the neighborhood where the crossplex is and police would suggest to us to go back due to the violence there. I wouldn’t mind living in the burbs like you mentioned but I’m not sure I could live in the city of Birmingham itself.

I live in Bham now. It doesn't snow here every year. More like once every few years. And Hoover is a god awful suburb. A model of suburban sprawl gone wrong. Mt Brook, Homewood, and Vestavia are the only suburbs worth a damn, and one could argue they're more extensions of the city than suburbs. The rest of the suburbs are boring, strip mall, cookie cutter home wastelands.

But I like living in Bham, even while languishing in the suburbs until my kids finish school.

The traffic seems to have gotten much worse since I lived there. It's a nightmare whenever I visit now. The city has grown so much in a decade. Theres lots to do for sure.

My pick of places to live would still be outside of Knoxville where the mountains are.

Is this not essentially the description of every suburb in America?

Birmingham’s suburbs trump anything around Baton Rouge, but if you look at just the city proper, Baton Rouge wins hands down. If you think that the LSU area is the only nice part of Baton Rouge, you obviously don’t know shite about the city.

The south Birmingham suburbs might be one of the most underrated areas to live in the country. The city of Birmingham is a shithole though. Worse than BR and Nola.

I concur with you in that Baton Rouge is a shithole. Aside from the university, I can't stand it.

However, the severe problem with Birmingham is that it's filled with Birminghamians and fellow Alabamians.

Pretty much. Blows my mind how often people will rave about a particular suburb of a big city like its some huge mecca of great life. Sure, it's super convenient that there are 3 grocery stores, 2 big box hardware stores, several chain restaurants, and dozens of other stores a short drive from my house, but the area lacks any character, history, or charm.

B'ham is one of the best-kept secrets in the world. It's a beautiful city and the people there are pretty smart - and polite and considerate.

I worked around there for a little while and I can confidently say that it depends where you are. The east side of Birmingham is a complete shite hole.

I've spent a few weeks per year in Birmingham for the past 15-16 years. Birmingham is more ghetto than BR with a few very nice suburbs.

Wrong side. West and north Bham are where the real blight and crime are. East Birmingham has seen a resurgence in recent years. Crestwood is a highly desired neighborhood for young professionals. Avondale is a popular neighborhood. And one of the nicest areas of Bham, Forest Park, is on the east side. East Lake and Woodlawn are both seeing a small renaissance. It's not fully back, but the east side of Bham is infinitely better than a lot of the western and northtern parts of Bham.
