Serious question, is Birmingham any nicer than Huntsville?

No.

I was under the impression that Huntsville was the place to be in Alabama.

It is. Unless you like culcha. Birmingham is full of (and run by) culcha.

Mobile's suburbs across the bay are really nice too.

It's a bit of a stretch to call that Mobile's suburbs.

Mobile suburbs are west. Did live on the eastern shore for a bit though and you are right, it is nice. Hotter than the 9th circle of hell though.

Scratch Avondale and Back Forty, and add Cahaba and Birmingham District.

Did my research for science purposes there also. Cahaba was a nice venue with average beer and too many kids and games. District was a cool place with great bar area but beer is meh so far. Hopefully will get better with age.

Just my 2 cents. Not hating.

My wife is having surgery at UAB as I type and been here for a couple of days leading up. My opinion as A Baton Rouge Native is same kind of roads and drivers. Not many good restaurants that I have seen. City is definitely crowded

I like to shite on Birmingham as much as the next guy, but I will admit the city does have some good food. What is your definition of "good restaurants"?

For a city its size, Bham has a wealth of great restaurants.

Well considering I don’t know the city that well, we have rode around and googled as well. I see lots of chain restaurants but not a lot of other choices that pop up. Must be lots of hidden gems that cater strictly to locals.

Well to start you have Highlands Bar and Grill. They only managed to get the award for best restaurant in the entire country last year from James Beard.

This thread is strange...that being said, yes Birmingham is an underrated city IMO. The suburbs (Homewood, Mountain Brook, Vestavia) are quaint and a great place to raise a family. The city needs a good bit of work but seems to be moving in the right direction.

Bham, Huntsville, and Florence

Where I live now, where I grew up, and where I went to college. I like it

Bham is a good place to live, it has the amenities of a bigger city, with like 1/8 the population, great music scene, and great food.

I do miss the slower pace of Huntsville and Florence, but Huntsville is moving away from that pretty quickly anyways.

Birmingham is way cooler now than it was when I lived there 13 years ago. It has EXPLODED with new things to do for young professionals. It's not a bad place to live. The only thing that I don't like about it is the food is subpar and you're surrounded by bama fans.

This is true. I graduated high school in 2006 and couldn’t wait to get out of Boringham, even if it was just down the road in Tuscaloosa. If I’m a 16-18 year old high school student I feel like I’d give UAB a solid look. The area in and around campus has completely changed for the better.

Yeah I moved to Bham in 2000 and lived in Highland Park. It's a completely different city today than it was then. Barons moving downtown, the state passing the bill allowing higher ABV beer and the subsequent explosion of breweries seem to have been the main catalysts for the change.
