The Bham suburbs are great. However, more and more 25-35 year olds are moving back into the city limits. A lot of people are moving into lofts/condos/apartments in midtown or Highland Park area, and houses in the Crestwood or Avondale area. Birmingham is super convenient if you live in the Bham city limits, Mtn Brook, Homewood, Vestavia, and parts of Hoover. Doesn’t take any time to get anywhere. Now living down 280 is a different story but that’s not really Birmingham.

everyone bitches about 280 traffic - I live off 280 at Brook Highland, and I can get anywhere I want to go without actually driving on 280 at all. just have to learn to navigate int he city - once you do, it makes life a lot easier.

I live in the same area, and 280 traffic is overblown. It's really bad some days if there's a bad wreck, but most days it really isn't that bad. I'd rather drive 280 everyday than 65.

B’ham is nice. A little dull. But nice.

It is where the first ridges of the Appalachians originate.
Nope. The first NE-SW ridges start farther south near Jemison, and near there they dive under the Coastal Plain, and to the west there's a subsurface zig that goes (at least) into Mississippi.
I'm not sure how these tie into the Ouachitas (not enough wells or seismic and the Reelfoot Rift system (I think) really was much more complicated to the south than anyone appreciates.

Hoover is a pretty nice place. BR is indeed gross.
Don’t you mean Mountain Brook? Hoover is like a hilly Denham Springs

Glad to hear Bham is improving but it has the 2nd worst demographics of any city in the south (after Jackson). Also, had the fifth highest murder rate last year. Doesn't sound like a quiet city.

Serious question, is Birmingham any nicer than Huntsville? I was under the impression that Huntsville was the place to be in Alabama.

Birmingham is still much bigger.

How are you defining nicer? Bham metro is a lot bigger than Huntsville, and has the problems that go along with larger cities. I like both cities, but I prefer Bham. "Nicer" is too subjective a term. Bham, Huntsville, and Florence are probably the only 3 cities in the state I could live in.

Mobile's suburbs across the bay are really nice too.

I’ve been there a hundred times. Always can’t wait to leave. Never had a good trip. People have a romantic view of where they grew up, but Bham is boring and people don’t seem happy there.
I’ve covered it for work for 15 years.

Scenic? Better, high-paying jobs? Better schools? Better neighborhoods? Lower crime?

What about Fairhope, Spanish Fort?

Scratch Avondale and Back Forty, and add Cahaba and Birmingham District.

There's less to do in Huntsville for a young single person but it would be a much better place to raise a family.

Scenic is about even. Huntsville has Monte Sano and Bham has Red Mountain. Both border its downtown. Schools probably lean Bham because of the suburban districts, though Madison outside of Huntsville has great schools. Bham City schools are worse than Huntsville City schools. Don't know enough about Huntsville neighborhoods to say. Huntsville definitely has lower crime.

I like Fairhope, but couldn't live there. Spanish Fort is gross.
