Confessions - I'm a cheap person, I make decent money but will drive a piece of crap vehicle.

All the men in my family are this way, one of my uncles died worth 7-8 million and drove a piece of crap truck every day and had cow shite on his boots/pants legs daily.

I'll do simple stuff such as brakes, oil changes, spark plugs, wiring etc.

I try to do everything I can myself. Really the only thing that holds me back is access to a good work area.

Hopefully next year I can build a shop behind the house and get a 2 post lift. Then I can finally live the dream of doing stand up suspension work, oil changes, etc.

I do it all. My father is a mechanic and I grew up around it. There is nothing I won’t attempt to fix. I’ve had a 92 mustang since high school that has had the motor out twice to do a complete performance upgrade and every part changed or replaced except the transmission. I bought an 06 Silverado from my FIL that needed the lifters and cam changed so we pulled th motor on that and completely rebuilt it.

That said, my father has all the tools you’d need to do these jobs so it makes it easier to jump in and fix issues or upgrade parts. I understand why people don’t do it, I just have no reason not to do it.

I do almost everything. But only because of the following:

1. Raised by a mechanic.
2. Raised in a time when you had to work on your own car and had no internet to help you. You learn “how” a car works.
3. I have a 3 car garage and an cheap extra car and a cheap motorcycle so I can take my time on repairs.
4. I have all my pops old tools so I rarely have to buy anything to work
on it.
5. I enjoy it. Turn on some old tunes and just relax while I work with no one talking to me.

I fix everything that I am capable of, which is a good bit. I’m retired and have time to do it. Also I know it is done correctly with quality parts. Matter of fact. I will be doing a complete brake job on one of my vehicles and just changing the pads on my other vehicle this week

I'll do anything that doesn't involve getting into the engine internals.

I can't remember the last time I paid to have someone work on one of my cars other than mounting new tires and alignment.

I did kinda build my own car.

Started with this

Took it apart until it looked like this.

Put it all back together with some modifications and ended up with this

I had the variable timing solenoid break apart into my daughters engine the other day... First time I've ever removed the engine cover... Easy as pie

Depends on the car. My son and I work on the 65 fastback, but let the pros handle the C300 and the Sequoia.

I've rebuilt a couple of engines. Never tackled a transmission, though. A manual transmission would probably not be too difficult, but an auto......I'm not comfortable with that.

I've never put a car in a shop except to have tires mounted/balanced.

I've replaced:

Brakes, pads, rotors, calipers
Alternator, battery, distributor, cables plugs
Radiator, water pump, thermostat, head/gasket, fuel pump

Just the other day I replaced a door hinge bushing/pin because the bushing was cracked.

Basic stuff. No major motor repairs these days. When I was younger, I pretty much
did it all but they were way more simple then

Ive done on my Tahoe over the years.

Window motor
Heater fan resistor
Alternator
Battery of course
Rear air module
Plugs/wires and filters including cabin filter
